Am I the only one who thinks that Raanta is pretty average?

hopefully their lack of Smith messes them up even with their improved D (unless Raanta is an upgrade on Smith, which IMO he is not)

More "win now" moves by the 'Yotes
A farily abrupt change in direction here. New owner impatient?

Taking a while to get to 5000

Re: Raanta: People treat him as the second coming of Price and he's on his 3rd team and hasn't really knocked anyone's socks off yet. Potential? Sure, he has it.

Coyotes needed to do this. Without Doan and Smith they were pretty close to icing a CHL team.

Yeah and the Rangers have been shopping him since their season ended. He's a good player but he's also a $6.5M cap hit. Not exactly the kind of guy the budget minded Coyotes are tripping over themselves to get.

I kind of wish Raanta was the goalie we got. And hard to discern his acquisition cost from this trade.
But even if you believe he is average, you would have to admit there is possibility he is better than that?
Given he was exposed in the expansion draft, I'd think the Smith package gets you Raanta.

Coyotes win this one pretty handily, IMO. A 7th overall in a weak draft and a declining young forward for a starting goalie and a top-six center? Come on.
Flames could have probably had Raanta for the 16th. I would've pulled the trigger on that if I was Treliving.

It would be difficult to argue that Smith is superior to Raanta at this point in their careers.

Good thing it's the NHL and not the NBA. They will still be fighting with the Canucks and the Avs for 31st place.

DeAngelo is a pretty highly touted young defence prospect, is he not? Is there more than one DeAngelo there?

I'm with you. Never thought the Flames should go after him, happier with Smith.
I, like some people in the business am biased towards large goalies because they cover more of the net. Raanta has average size
Guess we'll see if he's a legit #1.

Its Anthony DeAngelo, D man. Drafted 19th overall in 2014.

Based on reports leading up to the expansion draft the asking price for Raanta was "very high" which is more than the Flames paid to acquire Smith. I expect he was left exposed because the Rangers had a pretty good idea what McPhee was going to do with his expansion picks to load up on defensemen. Sure, he could be better than average, but I remain unconvinced. He is 28-years-old, he is not very big, and he is now with his third NHL team.
