In 3rd place with 8 fewer games played Rask faced 507 fewer shots. Thats ~63 shots per game.
That math doesn't make sense, friendo. It's more like 5 fewer shots per game.

I think the big thing here is that people here (mostly) agree that in a 3/4 role on the 2nd pairing, Russell gets exposed. He doesn't pass the eye test, nor the advanced stats test.

In a 5/6 roll with less icetime and more favorable matchups he's very serviceable.

If Russell got 5/6 money, then this would be a good deal. Instead he's paid like a 3/4 Dman and will likely play on the 2nd pairing, and thus will be exposed.

It's what cap strapped or under stocked teams do, they push guys up the roster that shouldn't be there and it shows. See Chiasson - 1st line winger.

THAT's why Edmonton's D is no good.

507 divided by 8 = 63.375.

Talbot played 73 games and faced 2117 shots.

Rask played 65 games and faced 1610 shots.

Thats a difference of 507 shots over 8 games.

5 x 8 well, I'll let your teacher field that grenade.

I'm not advocating that they are the worst defence in the league or anything, but they're not the second coming of Kevin Lowe either.

2117/73 = 29 shots per game
1610/65 = 25 shots per game

that's a difference of 4 shots per game. Am I missing something?

Talbot saved their bacon last season. Outside of Montreal I don't think there's another team that relies more on their goaltender stealing games than the Oilers.

I was looking at the difference in the number of shots over the difference in the number of games total, not the average.

Fair enough. I see that.

Talbot was lights out most of the season. He made them look better than they are.I wonder how long he can keep playing at that high level.

Seems like a reasonable discussion can't be found here.

Cheers!
I continue to be utterly amazed at how many Oiler fans are so desperate for validation from Flames fans.

If you're just here to have your ego stroked, you may as well just move on.

perhaps the most ironic question of Russell's TOI stat that is being thrown around is this:

is he earning more shifts because he is great?
or
is he stealing more icetime because he takes long shifts on account of he spends so much time buried in the D zone on what should be quick entry denials?

I don't know, 63 extra shots per game does seem reasonable. I use my eye test though for that, and I'm usually half in the bag if I tuned into an Oilers game
