Electricity that costs more than 40c/kWh and is also unreliable makes +40C temperatures much harder to live with.

They have loads of hydrocarbons, and they are paying 10x what we do for electricity? Wow. Someone must really be screwing up over there.

Even visiting other places gives you a new appreciation for Calgary.

As much as we bitch and moan, Calgary does a lot of things right.

And I agree, we deserve to be on that list, whatever order or ranking isnt really all that important.

Toronto shouldn't be on that list. I can't stand it.

We'll notify the Economist about your disapproval so they can augment their ratings for the next go-around.

Australia and the state of South Australia (where Adelaide is located) in particular are a good warning of what happens when you try to replace reliable coal electricity generation with only wind and solar, and also proceed to make it hard to find new sources of natural gas.

First thing I notice when I travel to a new city is the smell. Usually some blend of car exhaust, rotting garbage, diesel, and tobacco. Calgary doesn't have a smell. Though part of that is because it's so arid here.

Thanks I appreciate it.

I just moved back here from Calgary for the second time, and my comment clearly wasn't an informed or serious one. I miss Calgary and Toronto sucks. Let me have this.

McDavid personally pees in every pint of Yellowhead Premium Lager. And that's not even the piss they sell at the Strathcona Hotel.

- One of the best water filtering services in the entire world
- Very clean city. Workers actually pick up trash and there are garbage bins everywhere. Some of the ''cool'' cities in Europe are filthy compared to here
- Some stores that are open past 10pm. You can actually shop at night. It's not like that in every city.
- Most electronic terminals (ticket dispensers, ATM, etc) actually work. It's not uncommon in a lot of places to see a lot of public electronic terminals not working at all and suddenly your screwed
- Public services that for the most part are staffed adequately and know what they are doing

It's tricky to make a list of things Calgary does ''right''. Of course we aren't perfect and some cities do things better then we do. However when you travel a lot to other countries, its the tiny things that add up and make a difference to the quality of life we have here that other places don't have. Little nuances that other places have, that we just don't have to worry about here.

Haha! Actually, the majority of our Public Art is appreciated but I also think we have the sense to know when art sucks.

Just because its 'Art' doesnt mean that its always good. There is such a thing as bad art.

But as a City we've got lots going for us.

Calgary is clean, for a City its size it is remarkably safe, our crime rate is very low, you can own a house if you want one in the City or very near it and not sacrifice your job or home life.

Theres lots to like.

Australia is generally nice but having lived in both places, on the whole, I much prefer Canada. I found the cold much easier to handle than the heat, although that may have been my lifetime of acclimatizing to it. But the two biggest issues I had with Australia were:

1) The cost of living is extremely high, especially in the major cities, and;

2) The people were generally pretty nice but there always seemed to be an undercurrent of anger, violence, racism and sexism.

That said, Melbourne was my favorite city in Oz and I'd happily go back to visit.

We'd be within the top three spots in each of these categories if not for that darned carbon tax, god sarnit.

Melbourne is nice. As is Adelaide. Very comparable to Calgary. I have a ton of family in Adelaide and would be very happy moving there.

Also a huge fan of Sydney. Such a beautiful city. The harbour area near the opera house was something else. Walking the sidewalks looking for a good place to eat and came up on a public dock with a number of expensive yachts tided up. Waiters would come out of the restaurants delivering dinners to people on the yachts. I though that was really neat. What a life that would be. After dinner we sat at a cafe along the harbour, had coffee and watched numerous types of boats entering and leaving. Was a really good night.
