He was an RFA before this signing and I believe will still have two years of RFA status remaining at the expiry of this deal. But perhaps someone else can verify.

The most money he has ever earned on any NHL deal is 975K.

He will indeed be an RFA at the conclusion of the 2 years.

If I'm Backs agent and I look at next years FA class, I'm not agreeing to less that 6x7 or 7x6.
That's ugly. Good on the Flames getting business done now!

I wouldn't look at that type of money until you get a better feeling of what Sam Bennett is going to turn into. If Bennett looks to be taking the next step, then you really can't afford Backlund at that type of money. If Bennett doesn't respond in the first half if the season, then maybe you are more confident in signing Backlund to that contract. The Flames could extend both, and roll the dice on the salary structure, but I think they need to be careful. This is why that pipeline of cheap cost-controlled players coming in is so important to the success of the team. You can't pay guys big money if you don't have some cheap players to compliment them and average down those salaries. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Hopefully Backlund signs a deal closer to $5M and provides a bit of space for Bennett and Tkachuk.

But it was one way for two years which was a term he didn't warrant hence them walking away not qualifying him after. The killer with the Bouma deal wasn't necessarily the $2.2 million but the term for three years as you can't give out any sort of term to this type of player based on one year where they overachieved. Treliving clearly learned from this hence Ferland (a player slightly more proven than Bouma and Jooris) only getting two years.

?
Josh Jooris signed 2 contracts with the Flames.
His first was a CBA mandated 2 year ELC 2 way deal with max rookie base salary signed by Jay Feaster.
His 2nd was a 1 year $975k 1 way deal signed by Treliving. A 1 year sub million contract was not much of a risk or mistake given his 14/15 season. In fact Treliving handled that situation very well.

Here's a great (as usual) interview with Lazar on Edmonton radio. He says "I saw my potential come back in Calgary."

I like when he talked about getting his weight back - I can see Curtis being much more of a physical presence this year.

I'm excited to see what Lazar can do. I'm not expecting much because there isn't anything new in Calgary that wasn't in Ottowa. There is no reason that he should be able to put it together here when he couldn't there. I know, he had mono and was rushed in too young. So there is a chance that he will step up now that he is a little older. Either way, it's a very low-risk signing and trade.
