I like it. A backup goalie and competition for the 6/7 defence at basically zero cost. Both players will hopefully improve in a different organization and if not they can easily be sent to the minors while giving one of the younger goalies or defence a chance.

Go Treliving and let's hope the legend continues!

Ryan Murphy has improved his underlying numbers every single season he's played significant NHL games. He got almost no minutes in Carolina. This is a very good gamble to take, IMO. Exacty the sort of guy you want to take a chance on.

Eddie Lack I'm less high on, he was pretty awful in Carolina. Maybe this is a fresh start and he rebounds. At under 1.4, the risk isn't huge or anything but a 1.4m backup should definitely be better than last year's version of Lack, so... better hope he's better here than he was there.

even better, it's only a $1.375m Eddie Lack.

I'm pretty happy with this. Options were drying up (Condon and Kinkaid are off the market, guys like Grubauer and Bernier will command too much money) and the acquisition cost was basically zero. If Lack can get back to the level he performed at during his Canucks tenure, then this is a great move. Doesn't rush Gillies or Rittich, but if they outperform Lack, it won't be difficult to correct this either thanks to his low cap hit. If Murphy can be a serviceable #6/7 then that's just gravy. Still hope they'll get in a decent #5 and let Murphy, Bartkowski and the kids fight for the other two spots.

Treliving is absolutely killing it this offseason. If you told me yesterday that he'd spend less then 4m today and bring back Versteeg, get a backup goalie and a depth defenseman for that amount, I would have laughed.

I wouldn't call those Hurricane teams Lack has been on all that bad, more mediocre instead. 86 points 2 seasons ago (9 more points than us) and 87 this year (7 less). They've have been pretty dominant possession wise though.

If Lack isn't good enough, then Rittich, Gillies, McCollum get their chance
If Murphy isn't good enough, then Andersson gets his chance
If Bartkowski isn't good enough, then Kulak, Wotherspoon, Kylington get their chance

Will be some fun battles in camp

At that dollar value, and acquisition cost, if one of our Goalie prospects outplays Lack in camp, there is no issue with sending him to the minors.

So what will Treliving's wizard move be on Saturday - a #5 d-man or a RW? I would still bet on the #5 d-man given his strong belief in having a deep defensive core.

He's had some interesting gear over the years. Even had Tre Kronor pads at the Worlds.

It'll be interesting to see what he does with the Flames.

Super nice guy and was a very good back up in Vancouver. Supplanted strombone for a time, though that was very much political too.

Decent move, even though I'd have liked to see rittich up this year. No complaining here though.

Good chance you will. There's no guarantee Lack finds form, and it's just as possible the D man might turn out to be the gem in this deal. Or not.
Zero risk, likely little reward... but definitely worth a shot.

i like it.. i like eddie lack... i think he had confidence issues last year and obviously his coach was rough.. harsh.. with him. i think under GG who is more of a teacher and mentor eddie will find his confidence again and be a very good back up to smith...

july 1st is two days away and the big oak Tree is almost done.. going to be a boring off season once the dev camp is done.. shaping up to be a fun team.. lots of moves...

I like this trade. Lack is great for a backup. Seems like a good team guy.

Calgary gets a goalie that could turn into a good backup, Carolina gets to clear some money. Murphy needed a change and Kanzig just a throw in.

Seems like a decent enough trade for both sides. The kind of move that could work out for everyone involved, or worst case scenario, nothing happens and who cares because in that case nothing of value got moved
