Russell had been on waivers (and cleared) prior to the Flames trading for him.

This is probably a trade that ends up being dick for nibbler in hindsight, but at least it has a chance of working out for the Flames. hey gave up nothing but the opportunity cost to acquire a different goalie.

Definitely the kind of reclamation project I like... guys who have shown an ability to produce offensively their whole lives but can't seem to put it together in their present situation.

Know what that reminds me of?

http://edmontonjournal.com/sports/ho...dnt-figure-out

Far as I am concerned, if Tyler Wotherspoon is a prospect, so is this kid, 19 days younger. In fact their strengths and weaknesses seem to compliment each other... maybe that'd be a good third D pair.

We're fans -- what do you expect? We see the bad in other teams and the good in ours.

That's said, Lack is coming here as a sacrificial lamb, for almost nothing (if anything they payed us Murphy to take him), that can take the burden of expectation and be buried in the A if things go badly.

I hardly see Flames fans glad to have him out of all the available options (as oppose to a good deal). If Lack doesn't work out we can still trader assets for a better player.

Probably the most colourful backup for the Flames since Jamie "Noodles" McLennan.

So... Smith and Lack? Uh... not exactly the names I was hoping for. Really hard to be excited about that tandem.

If our goaltending works out, he'll look like a genius. If it doesn't, it won't exactly be a surprise :/

Murphy can be easy to overlook because he still hasn't fully stuck in the NHL, but he was drafted just 3 spots after Hamilton. He's only a couple months older than Hamilton and a few weeks younger than Wotherspoon (who people are still holding out hope can find his way to the NHL).

He's only a year older than Kulak and has played 5 times as many NHL games.

Here's his draft video where Bob McKenzie calls him the best offensive defenceman "bar none" in the draft.

The more I look into this kid, the more I think he might be the piece of this trade that pays off the most.

I thought I read somewhere that the Flames scouts were really high on Murphy that year and likely would have taken him instead of Baertschi if the Canes hadn't grabbed him right before.

It is really odd to see the success he had in junior and how he struggled in Carolina. The Hurricanes have actually been really good at developimg defenseman too Which maybe is a but of an indictment on Murphy.

Please, can we stop with these Vancouver reclamation projects? Vey, Morrison, Shinkaruk, now Lack?

Lack is not a Vancouver reclamation project. He's a guy who did relatively well there. But moreover, he's a backup goalie.

Vey is similar. Treliving needed a warm body with experience to be able to call up from Stockton (where Vey has been pretty good). Shinkaruk has looked ok to me.

And Morrison? You mean Brendan Morrison who signed after a PTO and did very well?

I think this is partly a vote of confidence for Rittich. Lack cost nothing and should be considered on thin ice from the start. If Rittich outplays lack in training camp i wouldnt be surprised to see Lack waived.

This is a great trade, i really like the Flames have a acquired a solid backup.

Cap hit is low, and their is only 1 year on his contract.

I think that is correct.

I also think it shows that Tre thinks he maybe can fix Lack, and make no mistake, after last year, he needs fixing.

And there is also Gillies.

I think Tre looked at the cost of getting an established back up like Condin, and thought his method was worth the gamble.

Let's face it, in a cap world, you can't lock down every position perfectly. It's a question of priorizing certain risks.

Murphy is 3 years younger than Justin Schultz. Maybe a new team and new coach can change his ways as well. He'll be 24 years old to start the season, which is quite young for a defenceman.

The best of Murphy's peers in the 2011 draft have 1, maybe 2 solid NHL seasons under their belt. Hamilton, Brodin, Larsson, Kelfbom. Many others in his draft are just starting to solidify full time spots: Manson, C. Murphy, Nesterov, Beaulieu. Ryan Murphy definitely has upside.

I think Murray could do very well in our system where the D are allowed to jump up in the play, seems like this was a big part of his game back in junior
