Also wasn't Bryzgalov an 'elite' goalie when he was in Phoenix?

Yeah, put me in the camp that didn't want Elliott back, even if the alternative was just a lateral change on paper (although I think this is a slight upgrade given that Smith is a proven starter). Elliott was inconsistent in handling the starter label and was preseason-bad in the playoffs. Did not want back.

At least now instead of Oiler fans laughing and salivating at the news of Elliott returning, they won't be chirping so hard at the Flames picking up a starter that's had their number for some time.

Has anyone in this thread called Smith "Elite"?

As an old goaltender who played exactly the same style as Mike Smith provided he's healthy (knees and hips would be my concern) we'll get a guy that can win games when the team doesn't play as well as they should.

He'll also be an asset when it comes to puck movement and the transition game, however that comes with the occasional fluff that ends up in your own net.

But he is a upgrade over what we have had in the past and you could allow Rittich to take the backup role which gives Gilles the opportunity to be the man in the AHL and Parsons to be the man in the ECHL which is valuable for both those guys.

If the acquisition cost is reasonable this should be a no brainer for the Flames and honestly gives me hope that the back end will be solidified until Gilles or Parsons are truly ready to come up and make a push.

So is the rumour that the trade is done or that they are working on it? Different animals in my opinion.

I can't get excited about Smith. Not at all. But if Bouma, Brouwer or Stajan are going back the other way, it could be first of a series of moves and could make sense. Retained salary alone does not help. Also makes sense if Treliving believes Rittich or Gillies are ready to be a back-up. I think Rittich deserves that shot, and if he falters, Gillies will get his chance too. Still though, nothing to get excited about. But then again, nor would Mason. Hope for the best.

No, but Bryz was one of the worst goalies after leaving Coyotes. That's why I'm concerned.

I don't hate the idea. Depends what the cost is, and who the backup is as well.

If the Flames give up a lot I will be massively disappointed in Treliving.

I think even Elliott would have been better. But still better than stuck with bishop for 6 years.
Curious to see if we gave up, hopefully nothing not a great prospect. Maybe hunter s.

Well said, if any of those guys are heading the other way I would feel a bit better about bringing Smith in.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
As @FriedgeHNIC mentioned, ARI and CGY are indeed working to finalize a trade involving goaltender Mike Smith.

In 2011-12 with Phoenix he was 38-18-10 with a 2.21 GAA and .930 save percentage. He also carried the Coyotes to the third round (1.99 GAA and .944 SPCT in 16 playoff games).

Smith is a good acquisition for the Flames. Whether it's a good trade or not depends on the price. So we wait.

I'm surprised to see the analytics guys on Twitter so negative about this move. Aren't all his "underlying" numbers pretty good?

When Friedman or McKenzie report a trade, in general, the trade has been agreed to and they are just finalizing it.

I just can't see Tre giving much up here, no matter what Chayka may have said.

Last summer Tre got the 2015/16 NHL save % leader, who had just taken the Blues deep in the playoffs and was only signed for $2.5 million, and was just 31 years old for a 2nd round pick and conditional 3rd.

Can't see him giving up more than that for Smith.

CapFriendly @CapFriendly
If #Coyotes we're to trade Smith to #Flames, they'd only have Domingue left to expose at G. #Flames currently only have McCollum to expose.

Maybe Elliott or Johnson going the other way?

Who the back up is will be very important because he will probably be the starter by January.
