Mike Smith will be fine. GG had the team playing pretty structured game second half of the season.

I personally feel Smith hasn't been that good since Tampa. We'll see I guess. Flames goaltending carousel continues.

I kind of remember the same thing being said of the Brouwer signing.

You don't know what you're talking about. We have great young goalies in the system and Smith is the perfect guy to mentor them. Right now we need a rock in net and someone that has proven he can be just that. Not another 'shot in the dark'.

It appears that I am absolutely in the minority here but he's the guy I wanted all along. He has put up good numbers on a terrible team, he plays the puck well, is super competitive and he's big. I like this a lot.

I don't dislike Smith, and think he's an upgrade.
I do dislike giving up any significant assets for a 35 year old goalie. If he's coming for a reasonable price, I like it.

Ok, I admit I haven't watched them play but Tippett really ain't known for his crazy fast plays anyways I hope I'm wrong, as Smith never looked special when playing for Team Canada in the Worlds.

He was awful in Tampa, if anything he improved in the desert.

Is Arizona supposed to be the defensive team in this scenario? They gave up the 2nd most shots per game last season (34.1) compared to the Flames who gave the 23rd most (28.7). Arizona was also dead last in shot attempts stats.
If anything, this should be a case where a goalie should expect to see his numbers improve by joining a better defensive team.

If the Flames move Elliot's rights to a team, would that team have to give up a 3rd?

I hope to be wrong because goddammit this was worst case scenario for goaltending. That includes re-signing Elliott. Frack.

With goalies you can never tell, Flames have a bad history with goaltenders.

Mike Smith faced on average:
34.38 shots against per game last season
15.10 were low danger
10.83 were medium danger
8.45 were high danger
Brian Elliott faced on average:
27.81 shots against per game last season
13.01 were low danger
8.28 were medium danger
6.52 were high danger
So which team was the 'defensive' team and which one was the 'loose' team?

So you've said 6 time already. Give it a rest now, your opinion has been noted.
Depending on the details I like it. Would give our goal goalie prospects a decent time line to take over the net if they show they are worthy.

If this is true I bet treliving is thinking he needs a proven starter to hold down the fort and a young guy with potential to steal the job. If the young guy turns out to be a stud, great, if not you have smith providing solid tending

Don't forget his $5.67 million cap hit for another 2 years. I would have tried to go for Ryan Miller for a year or 2 if they wanted an older guy, though I am not sure Miller would play in Calgary. Miller is an FA too, wouldn't have cost any picks.
