Wasn't he pretty highly thought of at one point? Is it just concussion issues?

Yeah, if it wasn't for the concussions I would say the Flames should be all over this as a bottom pairing defensemen. But time for the league to move on and for him.

Had 4 years left at $3.7 mil AAV.

Because of his age, his buyout is 1/3 of the remaining salary spread out over twice the remaning length insttead of 2/3.

Buyout looks like this:

Only played one game last season, I imagine his career is over.

That hurts. They'll be paying him until 2025.

Spoiler!

Cap Friendly says Anaheim will actually receive cap relief for buying out this contract in 18/19 and 19/20?

I remember that hit. Smid had the history then, that could be the nail in the coffin. After that, I hate Despres so much especially he became a Duck.

There was also the speculation that the Pens were going to send Depres to the Flames when the rumor they were interested in Russell at the 2015 trade deadline surfaced.

You can't buyout injured players unless they agree. I assume Despres agreed. Otherwise the NHLPA might file a grievance.

That's an awfully big haircut to take. Could he be not injured? By which I mean he could pass a physical and sign elsewhere. I don't see an incentive here except if he thinks he can still play and wants to collect the 8 years of buyout pay on top of other salary.

You don't like to see anyone's career ended by concussions, so even I am not a fan of the player, I hope he can come back and end his career on his own terms.

This sounds like serious negligence on the part of the NHL, Anaheim Ducks and their respective medical staffs.

Quote:
Despres’ fight with concussions started with a knock he took from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie just days after signing the contract extension. The hit seemed somewhat innocuous at the time — it went without a penalty call and it took some time before it was clear what had put Despres out of the mid-October 2015 contest — but it resulted in Barrie being handed a three-game suspension. For Despres, it resulted in 42 games on the sideline.

He eventually worked his way back into the lineup, but before long, Despres again found himself on the shelf with a head injury. This time he missed six games. He was able to return to close out the season, and played the final four games of the year before suiting up in all six post-season games. He wasn’t completely healthy at the time, though.
“Well, I was sensitive to light,” Despres told the Orange County Register’s Eric Stephens before the season began. “Sensitive to noise. More emotional. I had headaches. Dizziness. Close to fainting. Stuff like that…It was a challenge. It was dangerous.”

The concern now becomes Despres’ future. He hasn’t played since opening night and he’s been out with an “upper-body” ailment since the second game of the season. At 25, he no doubt had a lot of hockey left in him, but it appears he now finds himself in a similar situation to that of Ottawa Senators winger Clarke MacArthur, having suffered multiple concussions in a short period of time.

As Murray said, though, the hope has to be not for Despres’ return to the ice, but for him to be able to live a “happy, healthy, normal life” away from the rink.

I wonder if the ducks are also gonna buy out Bieksa. Be a lot of dead cap for them.

I thought it was reported earlier that the Ducks and Vegas had worked out a deal for Bieksa.

Bob McKenzie ✔ @TSNBobMcKenzie
It's believed ANA has a pre-arranged deal in place with VGK so it isn't necessary to ask Kevin Bieksa to waive his NMC.

as an injured player, why would he agree to a buyout and leave nearly $10M on the table?
