The snow...is here! Snowmaking has begun, it won't be long now!
Nakiska Ski Area

We bought the bargain Nakiska season passes - anyone else get those?

Super excited for the upcoming season. I just hope it's more consistent then last year. It started out good last year. But all of the snow seemed to fall in the City and it didn't really start to get a ton of snow in the mountains until 2/3 through the season. Less snow in the city and more consistently in the mountains please.

Yep. For $200 I figured it would be a great incentive to get me out a few more times. Even if I use it 3 or 4 times I'm still ahead.

Didn't get them cause I despise Nakiska (How many times can you ski the same glades in a day?) but I have a friend who did so I might head out a couple times more than I usually would.

Nakiska is the worst.

I'm not a huge Nakiska fan but holy fata did they get snow there last year. I had my 2nd best powder day all year there last year.

The season pass sale they had was unreal. I convinced a few of my buddies with families to get a pass there this year. You just couldn't beat it especially with kids.

Yep. Family pass was a great deal. Hope to get out more this year.

What else is there to do out there during the day? Places for lunch / dinner / other entertainment?

Looking for Gear for the season? Our Club hosts 2 AWESOME ski swaps in Canmore and Banff. Loads of great gear and the prices are usually great! (not the Calgary ski swap that everyone wants what they paid for their stuff originally!)
**Try and get early bird tickets if you are looking for kids gear! very reminiscent of cabbage patch doll frenzy when the doors open and the rush heads straight for the little guys gear**

How old is your daughter? My girl is 8 and my son is 7...we've had them in lessons the past two years. I wouldn't say they are loving it, but they're definitely improving. I'm hoping this year they get a little more excited about it.

We did skiing two years ago and snowboarding last year. We bought all the snowboarding gear, so we'll continue with that this year. They don't really have a preference, but skiing seemed easier to pick up compared with snowboarding (with my kids, anyway).

She will be 11 in a couple of weeks.

I noticed a huge improvement after I told her to think of them as big skates. It seems to flip a switch in her heard and she was using her edges a tonne more. It might not work if your kids are not good skaters.

Snowboarding has a steep learning curve compared to skiing.

I am getting my son (8 1/2) on skis this winter. He picks up sports really easy, and is a better skater than his sister.

When my buddy told me about the Nakiska deal this year, it seemed to me like a desperate last roll of the dice.

How can they possibly make money - or at the very least maintain the same level of income stream with such a cheap deal?

Well, keep in mind you can get lift tickets for $40 if you look around, so that works out to 5 trips at that price. So it is a roll of the dice that the average person will only go about 5 times. Plus my buddy and I bought passes, so that means others will also join us.

I hope it works for them. While I haven't been there in a few years, when I first went back to Calgary, I rekindled my love of skiing there.

Still a little early. They usually launch after thanksgiving. Or have you seen something confirming otherwise?
