Backlund will be the type of center (and is now) that will be difficult to put a line number on.
All year he was centering our #1 line... but few rarely ever called it that. He's an incredibly smart, responsible and versatile player that will be your #1 or your #3 center from period to period. I say pay him what he brings to the team, not what his perceived line # will be.

And apparently he can play the saxamaphone which is pretty cool.

Yup, pretty much. And what's more is that he deserves it too. There are few players who do what he does in all facets of the game. He's an incredibly valuable player.
What's funny is that if you were to go back 3 years in my posting history, you'd find me ready to write Backlund off unless he fixed his faceoffs. I was sure that he would be no better than a decent 3rd line center, and that was the one thing that he wasn't very good at. He improved in a whole bunch of areas pretty much over the course of 1 season, later in his pro career too. That doesn't happen often.

Backlund is not gonna re-sign under $5. He's one of the top defensive centres in the league. He's going to get paid

I saw him in the Chinook Mall Shoppers.
He gave me a look like:

I could see an 8 year deal at 5 million for Backlund. Call it the Oshie special. Front load it where he's getting 7 million for the first couple years, and then 2 or so in the last handful.
Basically getting full value out of him from 29-34 and then just an okay deal later on. Might be an option due to wanting to keep most of the important contracts cheaper so they can afford more under the cap. Make him the Flames Hossa.

Great news although not unexpected.
It will be interesting to see the contract. Backlund was the Flames MVP last season and finally got some Selke recognition so I can't see him being worth much under $6M. Hopefully a home town discount and 6-8 year term can bring that down to $5-5.5M however.

Did he steal our purchases and your girlfriend because that's the definition of a Selke caliber forward.

Did he say it like..."#### you! I'm Mikael Backlund!?"
Or was it more like...."#### you......I'm Mikael Backlund...?"

@CaptainCrunch - Nope, was alone and hadn't purchased anything yet.
@Locke - It was more along the lines of "Yeah, that's right, you know who I am, deal with it"

I think that would be a pretty fair deal for both sides. The 2m raise can be financed by letting Bouma go.
