Thank god. I was really afraid Chicago would go a year without an outdoor game.

The thing is, Blackhawks will still get viewership from Hawks fans, so from an NBC perspective, it makes sense. But still, Dallas got jipped.

The league needs a team in Wisconsin to form a good rivalry with Minnesota and Chicago. They also need a team back in Hartford, because nice jersey's.

How great would it be if there wasn't an outdoor game for a year or two...just to make it special when it happens again. I guess it still makes lots of money as long as it's not in Vancouver.

Ya, they aren't about special...it's about $$. If they can get huge crowds year after year and great ratings...then they'll just keep adding more and more.
How about we just make it the Chicago Classic and rotate teams playing them every year?

Believe me, many Chicago fans dislike this novelty game too...our team is built for speed and puck possession...playing on marginal ice, in unpredictable conditions, limits these advantages, and puts our players at injury risk.
But the Marquee value, to NBC, of Toews/Kane/Keith/Hossa/et. al. cannot be denied, and the 'Hawks do play an attractive offensive style that won't bore casual fans.

but in all fairness, the game could be in any other city and as long as they're playing against the oilers, that team would look amazing too.

I thought the Stadium series was a one-time thing as a "lock-out apology".
If they had just stuck to one Winter Classic per year, it would still be interesting and there would be less repetition with the teams. This is just ridiculous.
And I agree you want to talk about growing the game in southern markets? How about actually including them in these things? Have a winter-destination host a south team, how is that so hard?

I don't see the issue.
The Winter Classic is still the premier game that is the made for TV event.
These secondary events aren't for TV but to bring the game to other locations for the in-person experience.
Having been to the one in Calgary I can say it was a great time, and it is a much cooler experience in person then it is on TV. As long as the games keep selling out, and the fan bases keep enjoying going I don't see too much of an issue.
That is why Chicago in that game is even more ridiculous in my opinion, the Stadium Series games are supposed to be more fan service and you have to think that the Minnesota fans would have loved North Stars vs Wild.
Hell even Mighty Ducks vs Wild would have worked, we all know that the real Mighty Ducks started in District 5 Minnesota

The problem the NHL has is that the Winter Classic is NBC driven, and NBC only cares about the seven or eight teams that drive TV viewers. That leaves 22-23 in the lurch.
The Flames campaigned for years to host an outdoor game, and it was through the debt the league felt it owed Harley Hotchkiss that it agreed to revive the Heritage Classic name. When Calgary crushed Pittsburgh's WC for revenue and sponsorship (despite nearly 30,000 fewer seats capacity), that pretty much cemented the ability to host more than one outdoor game.
The Stadium Series is the American version of the Heritage Classic - games meant to appeal more to the local markets, and designed for the teams NBC doesn't care about so much. They did four last year to generate revenue out of the lockout. The league seems to think that two a year is a good number. There was only one this year because of concerns over legal problems caused when Philly cheated its season ticket holders at their WC.

Apparently, the League wanted Dallas/Minny, but Leopold wanted Chicago/Minny... http://www.startribune.com/sports/blogs/289382851.html

Now that makes sense about the Bhawks in the stadium series vs. the Wild, Leipold wanted it. I think the Stars will be the next opponent in the venue that isn't chosen the first time (TCF or Target Field).

Yeah the NHL has really beaten the golden goose to death here. The volume of games and the repeated appearances by certain teams has killed any charm it once held.
If it were my call I'd keep the Winter Classic untouched, and then alternate Heritage Classics and Stadium Series game every second year.
2015 - Winter Classic
2016 - Winter Classic & Stadium Series (I actually do like the California teams hosting)
2017 - Winter Classic
2018 - Winter Classic & Heritage Classic
And so on. Every second season has two outdoor games, and makes the Heritage Classic/Stadium Series games a once in 4 years event.
But this of course ignores other things like the Olympics and the league's desire to fire up the money printing machine as much as possible.
