Default Paul Byron nominated for Bill Masterton Trophy

Paul Byron has scored 20 goals this season, and has been nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy, which is awarded annually "to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey".

I am very happy for Paul, and wish him continued success throughout his career.

Good for Byron!

A shame he still isn't a Flame.

Good for him. It's crazy how razor-thin the line can be between full time NHLer and finishing your career in Europe.

For the same reason, Versteeg will probably be the Flames nominee this year.

Of course, you have to assume that the award is going to Anderson this year.

Good for him to get the nod.

^agree on Anderson winning the award after the tough personal year he has had.

I've heard from scouts that there are approximately 350 top elite players in the world. They make up half of NHL rosters. The other half of the rosters can be filled by the next 2,000 to 3,000 top players in the world. If you're not a top NHL player then getting into and staying in the league can be as simple as having the right opportunity or being seen by the right person.

Hope he wins. I always liked him as he never took a shift off and plays above his size.

Wish we could transfer his work ethic to other guys on his team. Terrific hockey player.

20 goals is really surprising for Byron. He used to make great plays here in Calgary but he could never finish.

I think Anderson is definitely a front runner, but as far as nominees you always need to throw in an Oiler refugee (Justin Schultz).

Obviously receiving well-deserved recognition for overcoming his time as a Flame.

Markus Granlund should pot 20 as well. Tre seems to struggle a bit with the bottom 6 signings/trades, if he has a weakness maybe that's it as a gm.

Granlund also plays top 6 minutes in Vancouver so not sure he would've had the same opportunity here. Who would be have replaced?

He was always fun to watch with the Flames. Small but wasn't afraid to play a grinding game in the tough areas of the ice, and was responsible at both ends. A good utility player in today's game. Too bad the Flames made the choice to put him on waivers - a clear mistake the moment the news broke.

Joni Ortio had a decent season in the SHL, finishing with the 4th-highest save percentage of goalies starting at least 25 games - .919.
Lance Bouma has 3 goals and 4 assists in 54 games with the Flames.
Brandon Bollig has 10 goals and 9 assists in 45 games in the AHL.

I'm happy for him. A couple of seasons ago, I picked him in the bold predictions thread to score 20 goals and 40 points. You always knew he had the talent to do it, it was just a matter of everything coming together.

Markus just shut down his season with a nagging wrist injury
