Was curious who voted on this award, so I checked wikipedia
Quote:
The award is given to a player selected by Hockey Hall of Fame center Mark Messier to honor an individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes. It was first awarded during 2006–07 NHL season and sponsored by Cold-fX.

Ok.

I hope those calling for Gio to be traded early in the year are eating some crow. He went on to have a very good year, and obviously he's a shining example to all the other young players on the Flames.
The time may come to move on from Gio, but it's not now, and it's not in the near future.

This is the dumbest award in probably any pro sport.
Kudos to Giordano if he wins though.

Giordano is a great on-ice leader (and even better person off the ice from what I've been told) who's done a tremendous amount for various charities.
But (really) how is this different than the King Clancy Award? Other than being corporate-sponsored?

Unless King Clancy himself is selecting the winner, the Messier award is objectively superior.

The Professional Hockey Writers and Broadcasters vote. It was a posthumous award. Lanny McDonald was a worthy first recipient.

I'm with Barclay Donaldson on this one. It'll be in the Hockey News. I'll save you a copy.

Nope. It was awarded monthly for the first year. Then Chelios won it at the end of the year. Then Sundin the next year. Then in the third year of it's existence Iginla became the 8th player to receive this most prestigious honour. But he's not a 1.2 time winner like Sidney Crosby, a record unlikely to ever be equalled.

Even during the playoffs, there was talk from some on CP about how he wasn't that good of a leader because the Flames were losing. As if those people somehow had an idea of what kind of person he is in real life, let alone in the locker room.
When you have coaches, GMs and players from not only the Flames, but around the league singing his praises, I think you've got a keeper for captain.
I hope he wins the award so that inevitably when some bozo next season goes on to trash his leadership skills during a losing streak, I can simply post a photo of him holding the trophy.
