Man I understand why he took the job but that has to be one of the worst situations a first time head coach has had to face. The Las Vegas job will be a cake walk compared to this one. He's going to fail but it's going to be largely due to the roster he's got to work with.

Stevens and Green were very obvious choices for their new jobs

No coach is going to be able to help that team for a couple of years yet. This is all GM rebuilding mode now, and some nifty roster adjustments to get the old guard out.
I'd say good luck to them but I have the Canucks more than any other team in the league.

Regardless though, he needs to get the head coaching experience. It's the nature of the job, all NHL head coaches fail eventually if wins and loses are the only barometer of success. But the only way a team ready to contend will likely give him a job down the road will be for him to cut his teeth somewhere.

According to Dan Murphy of Sportsnet, it's a four year contract for Travis Green.

But on the flip side, the last several former Canucks' head/assistant coaches have gone on to significant success after "doing their time" behind the Canucks bench.
Alain Vigneault (SCF with NYR)
John Tortorella (14-game win streak with CBJ)
Glen Gulutzan ('nuff said)
Mike Sullivan (Stanley Cup with PIT)

Taking a while to get to 5000

Yep, Green's future looks bright. Just not with Vancouver.

Expectations are likely to pretty low for that team, so might not be that bad. Four year contract is a lot of guaranteed money.

I was kind of in that camp as well as he had multiple interviews with the Flames so I assumed they liked him. I suppose we will find out if this guy may have been a good hire for the Flames or not.

No brainer from Vancouver point of few, his contract was up so it was either give him the big job or lose him. Hopefully theyre smart and realize the situation they're in though, Willie wasn't exactly the problem with that team

I don't know it somewhat screams like the Vancouver Dallas Eakins scenario for Travis Green. A pretty promising coach, that will have no way to truly achieve his potential given the dumpster fire of a roster. That being said, the expectations for Green will be much lower for Green than Eakins, but I don't think it's a good situation for him to be honest.

I think a guy is better off to head coach in the AHL or be an assistant coach in the NHL for a good organization to build up experience and reputation.
Jumping in as a rookie head coach for a terrible team could backfire in a big way.

He's been the head coach in the AHL for the past 4 years. Had a deep run one year too.

For those wondering why a coach like Green would go with the Canucks given their roster, the guy is about to sign a 4 year deal for life changing money for him and the family. We may all hate the Canucks organization but given the upgrade in quality of life both professionally from working in the NHL and personally by moving to Vancouver and having a large salary associated with it, it makes sense.
Everybody needs to start somewhere to gain the experience and say they could grow. The idea is that each stop along your NHL career you are exposed to different people and different scenarios that should improve your resume going forward.
There are only so many of these positions in hockey available so a rookie can't be expected to be as picky as a veteran coach like Hitchcock, Babcock etc.
