I think that the writing was on the wall. I like Sutter a lot, but you cannot feel bad for him. He came in, won 2 cups, made a boat load of cash and if he wants to work again, it is just a matter of time before he coaches again.
I think he is a fit for the Jets - established core that is underachieving and that needs to have a coach that can squeeze more out of them.
In some ways they are probably doing him a favour - Kings won't be competitive for a while and they need a different kind of coach for that.

I wonder if BT could pry Carter away from the new LA management for a song, as they look to clear some cap space?
Contract clearly goes on too long, but buy we would he be a perfect add to our young roster. Big, fast, right shot, plays wing or center, Cup experience...
I'd do it if the Flames can somehow make Brouwer disappear.

Also the reason they had 2 cups in 3 years. Do people really expect GM's to be infallible for decades on end?
He was also the guy that got laughed at when he brought in Darryl Sutter, yet it paid off massively.
No matter what anyone says Lombardi achieved great things.
Would any Flames fan not take 2 cups in 3 years if it meant cap difficulty after that?

also replacing those guys with former stars doesn't seem like a good move. Colorado's tandem of stars went way of the Titanic. Blake and Robataille have what pedigree?

What has he done for them lately though? Because that's all that matters. The core that won those cups is mostly intact, but he's done nothing to maintain the success like Bowman has in Chicago.

The Jets would be well advised to look at both of them.

IIRC, Rob Blake was always the heir apparent. He had been serving in various capacities in the Kings organization, including assistant GM. So I am not too surprised with this move

Given that many people thought the Kings hiring of Sutter was a massive joke, I think he did quite well there. Glad to see him have success after the end of his time in Calgary.

All the pieces were there, and if it were not for Sutter, the Kings were not winning those cups.

BT is good... but not that good.
more likely that LAK will be trying to dump guys like Kopitar or Brown or Gaborik before the guy who was arguably their MVP this year...

You never know what went on behind the scenes though. Maybe Lombardi let Sutter affect his decisions too much for example, which would be a good reason to fire them both. Or maybe Lombardi wasn't that interested in rebuilding anyway.

Results are the most important thing, but Richards turning from a 25-40-65 player to a a literal AHL player at 30 and Kopitar inexplicably turning from a top 10 center to a 10 goal scoring center are tough pills to swallow that I think go beyond the foresight of the GM. I don't blame Lombardi for that, and a rebound season by Kopitar may be enough to get back into the playoffs next season regardless of any other changes.
Gaborik contract was terrible, maybe enough reason to fire Lombardi by itself.

After the Flames bounce the Ducks, they can hire Darryl.

Lombardi was loyal to a fault. Not using a compliance buyout on Mike Richards is baffling. The Dustin Brown and Gaborik contracts are brutal. That team should have cut bait with those players sooner. The Lucic trade was a lot to give up for a guy that was a clear one and done player with the team.
I wanted Sutter when the Flames were looking for a coach last year. He would be a good pickup for a lot of teams but I think he is unemployed for quite a while likely his choice unless Dallas was interested as I could only see him going to a situation where the team is in a spot to win soon

And Phoenix. And Vegas.
A team with Quick and Doughty will always at least be in the playoff picture.

There are some good GM's and coaches that have never won cups so I agree that sometimes you do whatever it takes to get the ring and they did. That said they really god lucky on the Richards contract and there's some self inflicted wounds like Gaborik.
