Scola is a better signing than Boozer for a backup PF. Front line is worrisome but the East lacks big men so the Raps can probably be ok with a decent front line. Luke Ridnour has predictably been waived to free up cap space. And in light of yesterdays emoji war, here is the NBA player emoji chart to clear it all up.

Los Angeles Lakers signed former Raptor Lou Williams, PF Brandon Bass and picked up C Roy Hibbert in a trade with Indiana Pacers.

Summer league now finished. Norman Powell, the Raps 2nd round pick this year, performed extremely well averaging 18.3 points and 4.4 rebounds which earned him a spot on the All-Summer League first team. Assuming Casey doesn't survive next year, the Raps would be wise to check out Becky Hammon who led the Spurs to the summer league title and was apparently the only coach actually running sets and plays there (typical Spurs...).

I was actually down in Vegas during the summer league and got to check it out (sadly not when the Raptors were playing). If you're ever down there it's definitely worth going to, $25 gets you in for the whole day (up to 8 games early on) and the facility is set up so the two arenas can be accessed from the same point, so you can switch back and forth between the main arena and smaller gym (which had much better A/C) and you basically can always watch at least some action going on.

I don't mind the Demarre Carroll signing at first glance but this video made me laugh...

So the Raptors unveiled their new jerseys and all I can say is, we waited a year for this? Basically the old jersey with updated font and an alternate that has black and gold (for Drake). I'm not opposed, I just think it was an odd marketing campaign to build hype and not change it much. Meh.

They introduced four jerseys and none had "Toronto" on the front. I like Drake but way to rep the #6six #TheyTheNorth

It's not Drake who came up with that idea. It was probably some idiot who thought it was creative to make it "Canada's team". The same dummy who though the chevron's pointing upwards (or North) signifies Canada. Maybe to them but nobody gives a damn. Anyway, Drake probably puts in minimal effort but would take whatever credit comes his way. The colours he probably had an influence on. The more I think about it, I don't care much for this jersey.

Raps apparently close to a 4 year $60 million extension for Valanciunas. Good deal considering the rise in cap that is coming. Still feels like it might be a waste though if Casey doesn't start showing a little more faith in Jonas and giving him more touches and minutes.

Yeah, I'd love to get him locked up this offseason... between $60 and $70 million is ideal. The sort of money that's going to be thrown around next summer will be crazy. About half the league will be in a position to offer at least one max contract, so you're going to get lots of above-average guys being paid like superstars. And there's the potential JV gets one of those offers.

Well Tristan Thompson has deluded himself into thinking he should get a max deal, and Valanciunas is not only better right now but he still has a higher ceiling. $15 million/year could look very shrewd in a few months.

This contract for JV should have a clause where he can fire Casey if Casey can't learn to coach an offense that isn't based on long 2's and dribble dump off by ball hogging wings

So it's 4 years and $64 million for Jonas. Just to pile on Tristan Thompson a bit more, he rejected a 5 year deal for the same annual salary as Jonas. That the Raptors will be paying a starting big man less than a backup rebound specialist is great for Toronto.

Problem with Val is that he is awful on defence it didn't help that the Raps didn't have a great defender until this season. I believe the Raps have also hired coaches to implement a defensive system more suitable to Val.

Offensively, he was one of the best post up players in the NBA. He still needs to learn how to pass out of the double team, but it certainly doesn't help when he hardly gets the ball from our wing players.

I am rooting for the guy, because I think he has a chance to be very good in the NBA. I still worry that Casey is hurting his development.

So the Timberwolves are working on a buyout for Anthony Bennett. Two full seasons, two different teams, now a free agent. Is he the biggest draft bust in league history? Odds the Raptors take a look?

I think the Raptors will take a look. He is after all a Canadian and a big man which is not an area of depth strength for them. The price would be right for sure as there is no way he can demand much. Question is if they think he is worth the development cost. Would he be willing to play for their D-league team? There are some angles there that are certainly worth looking at.

Possibly the largest bust due to actually having played and not having a career ending injury. If he's an end of the bench guy making minimum, sure. But he has limited athletic ability, can't shoot, and has no ability to think within the game. I'd pass, 1st round pick 2 years ago or not. Really limited upside and only will be given a chance because he was 1st overall. If he went 3rd overall that year nobody would look at him sideways.

ESPN reporting that Bennett cleared waivers, and is close to signing with Toronto. Not sure how I feel about that. As a basketball Canada fan, I really want him to succeed, but I'm not sure that Toronto's the best place for that to happen, or that he fills any sort of role here.

If it works out and he comes anywhere close to his potential (which isn't typical first-overall upside, but is definitely lottery-pick upside), it's a great story all-round. Hey, even if he becomes an multi-purpose, depth role-player and has a long career with Toronto, that's a great story.

I could probably talk myself into liking this move fairly easily. I suppose the good thing about being in Toronto is that he'll have fans who are just rooting for him to succeed, and have no expectations about living up to first-overall expectations or about offsetting the loss of an all-star player at his position.

Looks like it became official, signing for a one year contract at the veterans minimum, just under $1MM

Rose to have surgery tommorow, after taking an elbow to the face which lead to an left ortibal facture in scrimmage today. Timetable for return will be set after surgery.

Really like the look of this team in preseason game 1. Lowry looks physically so much better. JV looks great, very confident, and nice effort to feed him. Ross playing great defense, Carroll's solid, Scola, Biyombo, Joseph all doing their thing. DeRozan hasn't looked great. Bruno getting some minutes and not looking disasterously out of place, but he's still a while away.
