I wouldn't think of it was a rebuild though -- that already happened, and a lot of good core pieces are in place. Eichel, O'Reilly, Reinhart, Ristolainen... good, young, top-end players in their positions. It's more about filling out the rest of the roster (particularly on D). We're not Colorado -- the team isn't far away from being in the playoffs.

This would not be the first, nor will it be the last, thread with a misleading title.

I would think they would start the interview process prior to naming a GM. This is a dumb rumour.

Edit: Thread title change, much better.

Still, to say an assistant GM is a potential candidate for a GM opening is hardly news.

I love Conroy so this would make me sad... I understand that it would be a great opportunity for him but but but he's Mr Flames! :'(

It's nice that a bright, well regarded mind is actually an AGM in our organization for once.

Would he lose all of his GM phones, or would get his fifth BlackBerry, that's the real question here.

It would be a shame to lose him; it's nice to have his enthusiasm and energy in the organization, especially with all of the young players currently and soon to be on the team.

He's great with the media and clearly a smart guy. He's also from the NY region so I can see the interest there.
Although Kevin Lowe went from player in 1998 to GM in 2000, only two years later. And Garth Snow went directly from backup goalie to GM.

Not great examples?

Craig Conroy beat the odds from being a 6th-rounder to playing 1000 NHL games.

Smart, well-liked and respected. He's earned his shot. If not here, then somewhere else. Sooner, rather than later.

Yzerman was named the Lightning GM after just 4 years in management for Detroit.

I wish all the best for Conroy, but there will certainly be some pretty high pressure on the future GM and coach of the Sabres. Maybe not the ideal situation for a rookie GM. You are better off staying with us Craig!

There's no such thing as a GM job without pressure in the NHL. There are few better situations to walk into as a GM than one where your top two centres are Jack Eichel and Ryan O'Reilly. Managing to #### that up is an indictment of Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma.

Potsdam NY isn't far from Buffalo. So he'd be close to family.

Yeah, agreed, and Conroy will probably do well there too. Would suck to lose him, that's all.

It's still about a 5 hour drive, if he wants a job close to family he should hold out for an Ottawa or Montreal gig

Conroy shouldn't even consider taking the position if it is offered to him.

Obviously the rumors about Eichel have a temper tantrum like a 2 year old were true. Eichel told ownership the Coach/Gm go or he doesn't re-sign with them.

It's not fair for a guy like Conroy to have to manage people like this for his first gig as a GM.

If he sits patiently in Calgary he will be our next GM when Treliving eventually takes Burke's job.
