When theres that many trailers around you're bound to get some tornadoes.

Looks like it will miss most of Florida and hit the states to the north. As you can read in Jeff Masters blog, the models are showing the hurricane will move out to sea this weekend but potentially loop back next week and hit the Bahamas and Florida.

Cali, after seeing Matthew change its path slightly and be looking like it's gonna hit Florida more directly, and the evacuation order that's been issued for Palm Beach county, I strongly recommend you get out of Boca if you can.

Heading inland fifty miles or so will make a significant difference. Follow the instructions of local authorities, and keep your head down while this thing goes overhead.

I appreciate this, but we're in for the long haul. We've got a solidly built house on relatively high ground, hurricane glass, provisions to last several days, and enough board games to choke a mule. Our property has been prepped and we're ready to hunker down and just wait it out.

If it's any comfort to you, it sounds like the max wind speed we'll experience here is around 70 mph. Not a light storm or anything, but it's nothing like what they're going to experience up the coast. That's where the storm is set to hit hardest. North of Palm Beach.

70 mph isn't to bad. I think Calgary has had gusts over 120km/h and all we lost was a Husky sign.

149km/h in 2011 at the top of the Bow tower.

Yeah, 70 isn't too terrible. I wouldn't even blink an eye if that's what we had.

However, if the storm turns just slightly, we'll get the full force of it and that's 140+ mph winds, which is over 220 km/h. At that point I'm ####ting bricks.

You know, I honestly didn't think about that until now. As long as it's safe to do so, I'll take some pics and maybe some video to share as well. Gonna be a helluva storm, so I imagine there'll be some serious damage.

Yeah as a land-locked prairie boy, some hurricane pics would be sweet. Only if you can do so safely though!

Don't bother with pics. Or videos. Just get somewhere safe.

But what if I can take pics and video FROM somewhere safe? Too late to go anywhere else now. I can take shots through the hurricane glass windows in our home.

I guess what i mean is do not feel pressure to do so because people in another part of the world want to see these pics and videos.

I think its weird that you posted here to get advice on how to handle this, get said advice from a guy who posts about living through typhoons, and then basically make the decision to ride it out anyway. I don't know what I would do (most likely evacuate), but that just strikes me as odd.

Because by the time he said that, we had already made the decision to stay and had done most of our preparations. The advice was appreciated, but it's too late.

FYI, we're not even getting any rain or winds bigger than a breeze right now. The way it projects, we're going to miss the main thrust of the storm where we are. I'm not seriously concerned anymore. We're prepared and we're in a relatively safe place.

Hurricane Matthew has now hit Category 4 and still a day away. This isn't something you want to hunker down for, especially if it takes a wrong turn and goes in direct. The storm surge is really what can become the most dangerous. This is not a baby hurricane.

Last big hurricane to hit of a similar magnitude was Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which was a category 5, and one of the most devastating hurricanes ever. Matthew is going to be similar.

I'm aware of all this information. My family and I have talked about this a lot. We are comfortable with our choice. Most people in our neighborhood are still here, and all the homes are well prepared for hurricanes. The building code here is very strict for just this kind of occasion. I've spoken with many people who have been here for years and storms of this level just come with the territory now and then. It might be really bad at times, but it's nothing we can't deal with.

It would be far too late to change plans now and risk being out on the road somewhere. The storm is set to begin moving in within 3 hours or so. That would be much more dangerous than staying where we are.
