Thanks. Is there a good, goto place to find out what the trade conditions are? IE. Is there one true source of truth?

Not picking on you, what you wrote is different than what is in the TSN story, which is different than what is in the NHL.com story.

The Devils do not retain any of Jagr's salary in the deal, and have their choice of whichever of the Panthers' two third-round picks is higher.

Some sort of hideous Frankenstein-esque amalgamation of all of them.

I was thinking about this the other day: can one make a fair argument for Jagr being the greatest player in hockey history?

I'm personally no Jagr fan, and wouldn't say he's the greatest ever, but his accomplishments probably stand up to anyone's. He was the best player in the league... in the 90s! And he's still a pretty decent player. He's put up unworldly numbers despite playing nearly his entire career through the 'no offense' era in the NHL (which persists). I guess he hasn't won many Cups, but man, offensively, there aren't many players better in the history of the sport I'd wager.

He was great as a rookie... almost 25 years ago!!

I usually go here, not 100% sure of constant accuracy though. It's a great site to see all picks acquired and traded away by each team.

No. Not when he played with a guy who was better.

Everything outside of Pittsburgh kind of feels a mercenary on a mission to rack up points. It's the Pens, and then everything else.

Browsing through HockeyDB, I though this was a particularly funny line in his stats sheet:

1994-95 Schalker Sharks Ger.1 - 1GP 1G 10A 11PTS

That must've been one hell of a game. Then pulled a Constanza and left on a high note.

He's not even the 2nd or 3rd greatest player in history.

Most lists I've seen place him in the top 20-35 range. And those lists are usually only NHL, so no Kharlamov, and don't usually credit Larionov or Makarov's entire career. Almost every list is pretty solid with the top 4, as well (Gretzky, Orr, Lemiuex, Howe in some order).

Which forwards since say 1990 are clearly better? Crosby perhaps? It's debatable, especially considering his injuries.

Remember, there's literally no offense any longer in the NHL and the guy still ranks like 5th ever in points. Imagine if he played through the 80s. Was Gretzky THAT much better?

Maybe I'm playing Devil's advocate because again honestly I'm really not a Jagr fan. Biggest thing in my opinion he comes up short on is Cups.

You just changed the goal posts. You didn't say since 1990 in the the post I replied to and yes Gretzky was on another level, as was Orr. They had to make rule changes to contain Gretzky.

Tough to measure anyone against Gretzky. He transcended the sport the way Jordan and Ali did as well. Even today if you ask non-hockey fans to name a hockey player, his name would come up a fair bit.

But as for the rest...Jagr will certainly be looked at fondly. He will also be remembered for his role in the 1998 Gold Medal winning team and how important that was to him and his country.

Gee, Jagr played with a pretty good centreman on those Cup teams in 1991 and 1992. (That's ‘since 1990’, unless they changed the calendar when I wasn't looking.) Trying to remember what that fellow's name was.…

Right. Which is why every single game is a 0-0 shutout, and they changed the name of the league to ‘National Goalie League’.

For forwards, my top 5 are

Mario
Gretzky
Jagr
Howe
Bossy (Seriously, he played only 10 years and had 573 goals)

Pretty good list! I'd have trouble not squeezing Selanne in there too.
