News Update

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Nothing official just yet, but all indications are goaltender Mike Smith is indeed off to CGY.

[QUOTE=Cantrader;6290497]I think even Elliott would have been better. But still better than stuck with bishop for 6 years.
Curious to see if we gave up, hopefully nothing not a great prospect. Maybe hunter s.[/QUOTE

So you rank these guys Elliott > Smith > Bishop ??

I respectfully opine that you're completely out to lunch.

Smith is a good acquisition for the Flames. Whether it's a good trade or not depends on the price. So we wait.
Yes I remember that run. But he is 35 now. I don't see him playing at that level anymore. Let's see though. If any of Bouma/Stajan/Brouwer are heading to AZ, then it may be a pretty good deal for Calgary. They also could have tried to sign a guy like Miller who is similar in age and still decent as well. He wouldn't have cost them anything either as he is an FA who also could have been a stopgap type and mentor the young guys.

My guess is one of Rittich or Gilles going the other way. Be prepared for that...

They are going to have to give something up of value - not a guy like Stajan.
Shinky+ something is my guess.
Heck give them Kulak too

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes

Many say ES SV% is a better indicator of a goalie's ability. Of 52 goalies with >40 starts the last 2 seasons, Mike Smith ranks 11th (.927).

As mentioned before, Treliving knows Smith intimately. At least he knows what he's getting. And it's probably pretty cheap.

That was five years ago for crying out loud. The guy is now 35 and the "good player on bad team" argument is a thin one IMO.

Maybe Elliott or Johnson going the other way?
Doubt it is elliott going the other way because of the compensation due to St.Louis in that scenario. I also doubt it is Johnson because I think he will be back as the backup goalie.

I believe the way this turns out is Arizona moves Smith to Calgary in exchange for the 1st round pick and a conditional asset, and then the Rangers and Coyotes make a deal for Raanta and Stepan, perhaps involve Duclair and another piece.

If the Flames are giving up anything of value, I can only hope (but not hold my breath) that Tobi Reider is coming with him.

2017 1st, Brett Kulak, and a prospect NOT named Andersson, Kylington, Fox, Dube or Phillips

For Smith and Reider

Would be just fine with me.

Yeah if they can unload some salary the other way in a Stajan or Brouwer to make the money a wash, it could actually be a great trade. (of course I fully expect a prospect or pick of value will be included)

Smith is a proven starter, and it never hurts to have one on hand while you wait for your young guys. Rittich or Gillies could very well step up and steal some starts if he doesn't play up to the level the team hopes.

Fair enough that he has had some exceptional seasons with the Coyotes. But that was five seasons ago. Iginla was still a perennial 30-goal scorer five years ago. Doesn't mean I want either of them here now.

I think it could make sense but seems like another of four years of lateral steps patching the hole in our boat with duct tape.

Copied from the other thread. Obviously only one snapshot of a goalie's abilities. This was while playing for the Yotes as well.

Pardon if fata, but what the duck Treliving. Awful, awful player management here.

How old is Smith again?
