But as to Elliott - no to bringing him back. But because he has simply not been good enough, not because he isn't friendly enough.

Is anyone tanking this year?

He's been mostly terrible -- unless there's a dramatic turnaround I don't think he'll be offered a contract from anybody, let alone Calgary.

Of course not. Hopefully he is better than he has shown but this is a results business.

I was kind of on the fence, until I read through this thread. Elliot has not been good for the Flames, and I don't think he should be brought back.

Is he a Curtis Joseph, or is he a Curtis McElhinney (or not even)? Only way to figure that out is to give him some starts at the NHL level, but it is always difficult giving breaking a goalie into the NHL. I am not sure he is ready (no idea). I just know that he has been doing well in the AHL, and is an RFA.

Flames are also facing a bit of a logjam in the system:

Rittich (AHL, 24 this year, RFA next season)
Gillies (AHL, 22 this year, RFA next season)
MacDonald (ECHL, 20 this year)
Schneider (Junior, 19)
Parsons (Junior, 19)

I would figure that Parsons (maybe even Schneider) should probably graduate this year, though I am sure one is going back to Junior. One takes over Mason Macdonald spot in the ECHL, MacDonald graduates to the AHL, and there has to be some room made.

Gillies of course will get re-signed. Does Rittich walk? I have no idea. I think you have to play him some games at the NHL level to figure that out, but Flames find themselves in the midst of a playoff race where one game can drop you out of the playoffs at season's end.

I really do think that the Flames have to figure out if Rittich is at least a capable, dependable backup at the NHL level. Going to be difficult working him in (outside of a long-term injury issue with one of the existing Flames goalies).
Completely agree. We need to see what Rittich can do at NHL level before a final verdict on Elliott. But I think there is a strong possibility that we re-sign Johnson and Rittich for next year. We save the 3rd rounder and let Elliott walk. Elliott's numbers are not even close to good enough. Hiller territory right now.

Simple. This could just be a down year and he may go back to the form that saw him have the best save percentage over the last 5 years. It's entirely possible that this is just an aberration in his play. It's also entirely possible that he's just not as good as we previously thought. I saw enough of him in St. Louis to believe he can be better than this, it's just not happening on this team at the moment.

Absolutely not. It's time for one of our younger goalies to step in.

I feel like they'd have an opportunity regardless of whether we sign Elliott or not.

I don't think it's wise to gift spots to rookies.

Especially not goalies. That's a surefire way to destroy their development and lose a lot of games in the process.

Agreed. If we're not signing Elliott, it's because there's another FA goalie we're signing instead.

Going with a Johnson/Rookie tandem next year is significantly riskier and likely worse than Elliott/Johnson. And it'd be worse to re-sign neither of them.

Elliott has played better in the NHL over the past month than either Rittich or Gillies has played in the AHL, and we're not over the moon about Elliott so I can't imagine how we'll feel about Gillies/Rittich.

I am not confident that Gillies or Rittich is going to be ready next year and if the Flames are leaning that way then I am not convinced Johnson can carry the load. I am okay re-signing Johnson to a 1b scenario but then we need another 1a goalie. If we go young with a backup next year then I think the Flames need to go out and get a legit #1 starter

Right now? Probably not, unless it is at some ridiculously low price.

By season's end? I don't know. Depends on how he performs. Great goalies have had terrible seasons before, Miikka Kiprusoff had several in fact, so I'm not willing to just give up on him yet and say his career as a starter is over.

Unless its a 1-year/$1M 'show me' contract, then no. And I doubt he'd agree to that. But he hasnt earned much more.

'Unimpressed' is a gigantic under-statement regarding my opinion of Elliott this season.

Bottom line is I'd wager he's cost us more points than hes saved or earned us. That makes him a liability. Cant have a goalie thats a liability.

No.

The Flames still need to find a goalie and a #4 defenceman.
