Default Avs buyout Beachuemin

per RDS reporter and Dater:

Yanick Lévesque‏ @ylevesqueRDS
L'Avalanche du Colorado rachète le contrat du défenseur François Beauchemin , il lui restait 1 saison @RDSca @Antichambre @GagnonFrancois

Adrian Dater @adater
Francois Beauchemin will be bought out, sources tell BSN Denver

as a 35+ multi year contract, Beauchemin's buyout doesn't change his cap hit, but saves the Avs owner ship $1.5 million in cash. Also frees up an expansion protection slot as he had a NMC.

given Burke's history with him, I am sure someone will suggest the Flames look at him

Was he that bad? I always thought he was a pretty serviceable defenceman. I think he'd look great as our number 5-6

If he can't play for that tire fire, why would anyone want him? I know that the Avs are hurting on the ice...are they in trouble off the ice? $1.5 million in cash only savings does not seem like much.

Was Beauchemin part of the problem in the dressing room? Do they have 7 better d-men? Seems strange to me.

Do not want under any circumstance. Too old and slow.

Had a NMC and perhaps refused to waive for the expansion draft?

Johnson, Barrie, Zadorov.

It was a question of whether Beachuemin would waive his NMC or be bought out. Only if the Avalanche were incredibly desperate to avoid the buyout would be going the 8-1 route and exposing players like Andrighetto, who was a bright spot for them during his short amount of games, or Grigorenko.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Beauchemin's agent Bob Sauve says the Avs never asked them about waiving NMC for expansion draft.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Sauve says Avs GM Joe Sakic phoned Beauchemin last night to let the player know about the buyout, said it was about team getting younger

He was a good defenceman in his day. I remember his fight with Iggy when Iggy didn't know he was a southpaw and got the worst of it. But his day has passed.

Resident Avs fan here. He was awful. If you didn't know better, judging by the way he jumped into the offensive zone, blew off his assignments, and his defensive positioning you'd think he could skate better than Erik Karlsson. The only problem is that he has negative speed these days and that positioning I was talking about earlier? Yea, it got exposed a lot.

I assume Sakic talked to McPhee and was told they wouldn't be taking Beauchemin.

As for the Avs getting younger, I mean, isn't that part of the problem? A lack of veteran leadership? Their captain is a struggling 24 year old.

Not sure what you're talking about. The Avs would've been forced to protect him.

The NHL game has passed Beauchemin by. He's done.

I read this statement and immediately thought about how dangerous it could be if challenged. In any other professional employment setting, it would be considered unquestionably discriminatory and punishable under employment regulations and would get our internet social justice warriors screaming.

Its kind of weird that they didn't even ask him to waive his NMC.

They might have been able to move him at 50% retained, which would have saved the owner more money.

Or they probably could have traded him at the deadline and gotten something for him.

GMs love old defencemen at the deadline.

Years ago he was serviceable. These days, I'd rather bring back Engelland
