Flames STH Meeting: Lunch Session
Haven't edited this yet but you should get the gist of the conversation:
Ken King
- recaps Calgary Next /Unlikely to happen
- Recaps Victoria park
- Continuing to meet recently as last week
- Flames submitted their plan to the city, the City will recommend to council their plan with city adjustments and will go from there, could be as early as today. Council can adjust city's recommendation and then will present to Flames. Urgency is big.
- 95% STH renewal
Brian Burke:
- Recaps last season
- Recaps Stockton
Brad Treliving
- Internal meetings done in may
- Protection list submitted this Saturday
- We will be a 7-3-1 protection team
- Figures we will take the 16th pick in Draft
- Vegas gets a 3 day head start to talk to players before FA
- We will have goaltenders for opening night, we bought the gear and it should be used.
Answers to Questions:
- Will always draft a goalie every other year in the top two rounds
- Mark Jank will push hard for a spot this year.
- Ticket prices rising due to keeping pace. Not to increase revenue move.
- Brad trying to answer why we're protecting a goaltender and do we have our #4 d in the system. "Good luck trying to pry that out of me" and he feels the #4D isn't under contract at this point. There was some talk about Stone cause he filled the role nicely and helped Brodie but not a lock and he's on a expiring.
- Are we doing anything to address the Anaheim streak? Brad: "Oh man, We're going to sacrifice a chicken to try to get a win there". Brian Burke" i have to say this, I hate them, I hate that building, I hate their players, I won a cup with their coach and I really hate him"
- Design of new building is "controversial fantastic". Plans Will not be released until nec.
- Shinkerik: had a great latter half of the year. should push for a spot
- Klimchuk: was sensational, but got injured. Might be tough to push someone out
- Poirier: went to treatment centre for substance abuse, came out completely different and is doing fantastic. Will support him all the way and are excited to see what he brings.
- So how does a rumour like OV get generated? "Fake news is the best way for that to be classified"
- Hathaway: skills are limited but he's big, mean and smart. We will qualify him and he's in the mix out of camp.
- On fifth ledge for draft pick
- King constantly jabbing Burke about not getting in trouble about what they say.
And that's about it.

The Poirier bit is the biggest piece of info. Hope he can beat his problems and become Ferland 2.0... maybe he still had all that #1RW upside...

Glad to hear them talking up Shinkaruk and Klimchuk. I'd love to see Calgary stop signing bottom 6 UFA guys.

I have mentioned this earlier about Poirier, and I will say it again.
It absolutely sucks that Poirier went through what he did. I am relieved to know that he has gone through the substance abuse program, and I hope he continues strong in that regard. If there is one silver lining out of this, it is that now at least his down year can very much be rationalized away. He had an outstanding rookie season, and his speed, skill and grit are very valuable commodities not only to the Flames, but the NHL in general. Kid is going to make it, and he will be a good piece to have offering so much versatility. I remember one year in junior he had more PK goals than PP goals, and we all know that he can put the puck in the net. Really hoping he builds off his rookie season in the AHL.
Who was Treliving referring to about the 4 D being already in the system? I would guess Stone, but when I think "in the system", I think Stockton. Interesting.
Waiting for the edit on Klimchuk. "Might be tough to someone.." to trade for him? To play with him? To marry the kid off?
Thanks for posting! Always nice to get some news!

I was trying to figure that out as well, was a little confused about wording.
I actually thought about Hickey when OP mentioned in the system.
I guess Stone fits as well.

Rasmus is signed though. I also wouldn't think they would assume a rookie is ready for #4 duty.
Which is why Stone makes the most sense. Perhaps there is a verbal understanding that he's going to re-sign but not until after the expansion draft so it has no impact on the protection lists.
That's the only guy that makes sense to me.

Treliving said he doesn't expect a young guy to come in and take the number #4 spot. He clarified that Stone is technically under contract until June 30 but the implication was that he wasn't "in the system" as he's a pending UFA.
EDIT: The question was about our #4 D for this upcoming year, not a future #4 down the road.
