Most Frequent Named Teams on Players No-Go Lists
pure speculation here, unless someone has access to real data somewhere, but with the Ovie talk I was wondering about which teams players least want to play for.
I am thinking part of the list may look like this:
1. Winnipeg (
2. Edmonton (climate, physical location)
3. Calgary (climate)
4. Montreal (PQ taxes, pressure cooker environment)
5. Toronto (pressure cooker)
6. Vancovuer (far away from many places)
Not sure after that what the list would look like because I have not been to many other NHL cities.
thoughts?

ESPN already did this for the last few years. I would link it, but it's an insider article.

You'd think that the ~30% lift on currency conversion would have Canadian cities starting to be looked more favourably.

I'm probably wrong on this, but wouldn't they make more in CAD and then when they went to convert it back to USD they would take a major loss?

I could see it for Canadians who want to stay in Canada after they retire. But if they plan to live in the USA or are American or European it doesn't really make a difference. And as Omega says, the conversion would hurt. Cost of living is likely higher here too.

I believe most (maybe even all) contracts are negotiated in USD. So you may have more buying power in CAD, but more than likely you pay more in taxes.

so basically teams that are not very good, to outright sucking for years.
shows it's not climate or taxes as much as wanting a chance to compete for the cup on a regular basis.

Yeah I wouldn't think Vancouver is on the no-go list unless someone just doesn't want to live in Canada at all - if you earn millions it is a pretty sweet location and a major international destination.

I can't imagine our 48% top marginal tax bracket is going to attract many free agents.

From my understanding all player contracts are signed and paid in USD.
So if you make $1,000,000 USD in Canada, your bank would reflect the inflated interest, call it $1,345,000, and when the player is south of the border, they'd see their $1,000,000

Florida is a gorgeous location to live, international and local flight hub and has is the lowest tax jurisdiction in the league, and players don't want to go there.
My belief having talked to players and an agent are that Taxes are basically inconsequential to most players.

That's not really how bank accounts work.

No.
Look: If a player makes $1,000,000 a year in Canada (all salaries paid in USD), that becomes about $1,350,000 in CAD. If the same player makes the same $1,000,000 in the U.S., that also becomes $1,350,000 in CAD. Only an idiot would assume that because the number in his income was larger, that meant he had more purchasing power.
It's exactly as if a man were exactly 72 inches tall, then measured himself at 182.88 centimetres, and because 182.88 > 72, concluded that he had grown taller. Measuring a thing in different units does not cause you to have more of it.

Arizona is a nice place to live but they would be first on my no trade list, considering the uncertainty surrounding the team and the fact that they lose every season.
