I think you're in the wrong thread. Fluke regular season? That's not Backlund.

I've always been really high on Backlund since the Flames drafted him. He just seemed to have a maturity about his game at the junior level that was all-around.

It may have taken him years to come to his full potential but the Flames didn't exactly have the pieces to utilize him correctly. Completely humble guy in his contract negotiations and wouldn't be surprised to see him give the Flames a home town discount.

He seems to be one of those genuine guys who really loves the team he plays for and unless it's leaving on the Flames terms, he doesn't want to be anywhere else but in Calgary.

I could be completely wrong on the above but the Flames need to keep him in the fold for a long time ala Stajan

Wut?

His best season was this season, and it wasn't a contract year for him.

Backs is under contract next year. If there is a Flames player less likely than Backlund to mail it in, I'd like to know who he is.

There are not many 50+ point centres who are excellent defensively and the heart and soul of a team. He finished 34th in points among centres (I took out Draisaitl because he's a winger).

Backlund's point production is equivalent to a top-tier second line centre. Add on the defensive play and attitude and you get a very rare player.

He's going to want a 6-year deal but the 5 is more realistic. I think it'll be around a 5x5.

I have a hard time seeing Backlund as a 6 million dollar guy, but comparable's would put him in that range.

He'll be at that tricky age where players used to be in their prime, but now that looks to be the start to the back nine. Term has to be kept to no more than 5 years and three if the salary starts at 6. It's reminiscent of Daymond Langkow. He wasnt as good defensively or in the dot, but was better offensively. He got a big 4 year contract at a couple years older but didn't deliver value.

I think next season, you start with the 3M line to ensure that we get off to as good a start as possible. At about the 25 game mark, hopefully the team is in a good position to tinker with the lineup a bit and you move Tkachuk to Bennett's wing for three reasons:

1) see how much Tkachuk impacted Backlunds production;
2) see how much Bakclund impacted Tkachuk's production (Tkachuk will be due for new contract in 2 years too so will need to know);
3) see if there is any chemistry between Tkachuk and Bennett.

You also have Jankowski as the forth line centre to see if he can replace Backlund if need be.

Meanwhile determine what Backlunds contract extension demands are.

By the deadline, you should have the answer to whether you keep Backiund or trade him.

How far off is a trade like this?

To Calgary
Tavares

To NYI
Backlund
Brodie
1st
Prospect

Gaudreau 6.75 - Tavares 7.5 - Frolik 4.3
Tkachuk .925 - Monahan 6.38 - Ferland 2.5
Jankowski .925 - Bennett 2.5 - Versteeg 1.8
Stajan 3.13 - Lazar 1.25 - Hathaway .925

Giordano 6.75 - Hamilton 5.75
Alzner 5.25 - Stone 4.25
Kylington .925 - Andersson .925

Fleury 5.75
Johnson 1.75

Out = Bouma/Brouwer/Hamilton

Comes in at 70.. so don't know if the numbers work. If not obviously take out Alzner but that is one sexy lineup... right side still kinda weak though.

Guy comes to play every night. Quiet leader. A Cup team needs a great shutdown center that provides offence. This guy is way to valuable to trade.

^ The Flames won't be moving Brodie. That leaves us with 2 of 4 top 4 dmen under contract. Singing alzner and stone is nice in theory but way to many questions to pull the trigger.

I'd like to actually see him shutdown an elite centre in the playoffs before we say he's a great shutdown centre.

He's had rough go at it in his last two playoff appearances going up against Getzlaf. Even throughout the season, did he really shut down any elite centers?

He had a career season which produced 52 points that he's likely not going to meet again. I think he can be a consistent 40-45 point guy but you don't pay players like that $6 million per season if you plan on building a cup winning roster. Personally I wouldn't make the same mistake the team made with Gio and extend him right after a career season. I would let things play out next season as he likely takes a step back which will help bargaining a long term deal. Or if Jankowski makes the roster and looks like a player maybe use him as a big trade chip at next season's deadline depending on where the team is in the standings. No rush here to do anything with him IMO.

Our window opens now for 5 or so years. Give him an 8yr 4.5 million backdiving contract with 6 mil for the first 4 years and 3 mil for the last 4 with a no move for the first 5 years. Anything past the end of the Mony/Johnny contracts we don't care about.

It would be a risk for the Flames to move him before knowing if Bennett and Jankowski can fill his role. Maybe I am just too bullish on Jankowski as I think he will be able to be our defensive third line centr that provides offense.

I also see Bennett as a centre and not a third liner. It really is too bad Treliving didn't go 4-5 years on their current contract extension for Backlund. Backs certainly has played well enough to warrant a 5-6 year deal in his first taste of unrestricted free agency. With Calgary having Monahan and Gaudreau getting north of $6M and potentially Bennett and Tkachuk in 2 years.

Backlund could potentially bring back the top line RW the Flames need alongside Gaudreau and Monahan?

Martin Hanzal is not nearly as good as Backlund.
