Not a fan of the lines lately. Honestly, the 4th of Bouma-Stajan-Chiasson was playing so well that I don't know why they would break it up. I understand trying to jump start others but not at the expense of a line playing well. Try Lazar with Backlund and Bennett back with Versteeg and Brouwer, less disruptive of all the line combos.
Hope Johnson can put up a strong start tonight and build some confidence in the group.

You realize "ever-soft" saved our bloody season back in Nov/Dec right, when Elliott couldn't stop a beach ball and the team was mostly garbage still learning a new system?
Went 11-3 during that stretch.

Go for the big win to keep the Preds at distance don't leave it to chance with a guy that hasn't played much lately and was poor in his last outing.

Johnson's last five games:
0.871 SP = L
0.947 = W
0.826 = L
0.939 = W
0.750 = L
Based on this I would expect a big game from him tonight. I think it is important to have the #1 goalie in a groove, rested and ready to go heading into the playoffs. It is also important that the backup gets a few touches without too many gaps in between, and hopefully a couple of wins.
Johnson will be fine tonight.

Beg your pardon? Are you referring to Johnson-- the same goalie who has won 18 of the 34 games he's played, gotten three shut outs, and has a .912 save percentage--as ever-soft?

Versteeg/Bennett/Brouwer has been proven to be ineffective while Bennett filled in fine for Tkachuk
I would switch Chiasson and Brouwer but otherwise that's the best we can do with Tkachuk out. Hathaway and Jankowski could be useful though.

He'll be fine.

I'm not surprised. He was a complete liability in the Caps game. He is not ready to meaningfully contribute right now. Next year (hopefully).

True that. It's his home starts that he seems to have trouble in.

Johnson has not been very good for quite a while now and had a horrendous start a few games ago. Nothing against him at all, he is what he is at this point but until the Flames are completely locked in, the team should be riding Elliott.
The Preds are an extremely good home team so this one, of all games, should be treated as a must win.

Or will he be beaten hard?

They had pretty much no choice but to put Chiasson on the top line with Ferland out. It wasn't to jump start anyone.

Johnson did have a poor showing in his last game, and he has been really streaky of late, but he was fantastic in his last two wins. Looking at his game log, I wonder if his poor showing in his last start had more to do with the time off: Between 7–24 Feb he played three games in 17 days and won two of them. His next start was not until 15 March—a full 20 days in between. I think Gulutzan is being smart here by not allowing Johnson too much time off from starts.

There are no games that are "must wins" at this point. This game should be treated no different than any other game on the schedule. A big reason for the Flames' success right now is how the coaching staff has the team approaching the schedule: All games are equal; all opponents are to be treated the same; all results are inconsequential to the next game on the schedule. The Flames are all about playing every game the same way, and it is working.
