I haven't waded through the entire thread, so sorry if this has been mentioned before, but this is just another example of how bad the officiating has been. That elbow probably deserved 5 and a game and if that was called then I highly doubt there would've been any more supplemental punishment, but since the officiating is terrible the NHL had to step in a enact some sort of discipline. So now instead of having Tkachuk out for 2/3rds of 1 game, he's out for a full 2 games. I'd love to know what kind of reviews/standards the refs are held to because this is the worst officiating I've seen in 30 years. Not just in Calgary, league wide.

FWIW, Theo liked Tkachuk's elbow...

“I love it,” Theo Fleury was saying Tuesday afternoon, picking up the phone to chat about a young Calgary Flame that has opponents all hot and bothered about his respect for both the rule book and “The Code” that players are supposed to adhere to.

Tkachuk, a 19-year-old rookie, fed Canadian Olympian Doughty a vicious elbow Sunday night in Calgary, for which he was suspended two games by the department of player safety.

Fleury could only laugh: “I would be broke making $8 million a year if I were playing in the league now. I’d be suspended all the time.”

Yeah, Fleury didn't care much about "the code." Especially the parts about rookies and veterans. I remember a game against the Kings in his first full season on the Flames when Fleury left his feet to take a flying leap at a 40-ish Larry Robinson in the corner. When he recovered, Robinson's mouth was hanging open in astonishment. He probably hadn't been hit like that by a young player in ten years.

Yeah Fleury was a dick. Remember him scoring a goal and blowing kisses at the opposing bench? I came back to bite him in the same game.

I remember he was a bit Tootoo like in that he'd start swinging before the other guy knew he was in a fight. When you're a munchkin, you need every advantage you can get I guess.

You must have a great memory.

Fleury had 2 career fighting majors....Kyle Calder and Jim Montgomery.

1995-96 and 2001-2002 season.

You guys are crazy. Loved the way Fleury played, if I had to compare his style to another Flame who would it be....oh right, Matthew Tkachuk.

Now why on Earth would you go and do something like that?

Yeah, I never argued either of those points. What are you getting at? Still not worth a suspension.

Hahahaha I kinda love that final line.

Whether he likes it or not, Tkachuk just fitted himself for a big, black Stetson."

That hit from behind 5 and a game from Polak tonight seemed far worse than the Tkachuk elbow. What are the chances Polak just gets a fine or a 1 game suspension?

Maybe he got a lot of generous roughing calls then. I remember him fighting in his rookie season. Cherry made a big deal of it.

Tkachuk dismisses any thought of "revenge" by Doughty tomorrow night:

Quote:
“(Doughty) is a good player, so I don’t think his focus will be too much on me,” Tkachuk said. “My focus isn’t on him. My focus is on the playoffs.”
What a beauty.

Some other great quotes from Tkachuk firing right across at Doughty:

Quote:
“I expected more from him, honestly, than to go right to the media and start complaining after a loss,” Tkachuk told Postmedia. “But he’s a good player. He’s a good enough player where he doesn’t have to worry about any of that stuff. He’s a skilled guy and everything like that, and he’s won a couple of Cups.

“He’s still a real good player, so I don’t think he’ll be too worried about it tomorrow.”
Quote:
“It has no effect on me what (Doughty) says or anybody on their team says,” Tkachuk said. “If it was a pretty dirty play …

“I mean, nobody really did anything about it and nobody on our end really thought it was that bad. But that’s in the past. Tomorrow, it’s just another game and hopefully another game closer to playoffs.”

Lol making 8 million a year. Oh Theo... The arrogance just tickles me. But I agree with him about Tkachuk. Love the dgaf attitude. It's exactly what the flames need with a lot of opponents players in the west often straddling the same line and taking liberties against them. Now we have someone to respond in kind, and even initiate.

Well, the Rangers did actually pay him $8.5 million that one year, though I suspect they regretted it badly.

If you took Fleury in his prime and TARDISed him into the NHL today, he probably would be getting offers in the $8m range as a UFA. And if you took the current NHL rules and implemented them back in 1995, well, Fleury probably would have spent a lot of time under suspension. Not as much as Scott Stevens, say, but he'd have been up there on the ‘most wanted’ list.
