There are two sides to this one. I get it Smyth was cutting across the front of the net, so he laned him. So thought, maybe he thought that Smyth was going to keep cutting across the net.

However there's no way that he didn't see the goal light flashing as he came in on the hit. And this is a pretty classic targeting penalty right to the point where he leaves his feet.

Some real solid looking defence there. Was that Kris Russel sliding back on his stomach as Smyth walked around?

Not as bad as the Dale Hunter incident in terms of lateness after the goal, but predatory and easily avoidable.

No surprise Sheen's stat line for his "never was" career is to basically take his total games played and multiply by 4 to get his total penalty minutes.

I think it was dirty even if Smyth still had the puck, because headhunting. But I also think he had time to stop his check after the puck went in. Not only did he carry on, he went high.

Suspension.

Oh I'm not disagreeing, it was targeting and he left his feet and it was clearly after the goal was scored.

It was dirty. But if he had arrived sooner and caught Smyth coming across the middle with a good hip check, it would have been a play that we see on Youtube over and over again.

Yeah, that was a guy who came in with only one thing on his mind: do as much damage as he could.

I think had he not scored and the play continued, Smyth would have been more aware of his surroundings, and not let his guard down. Regardless, buddy came in blind side.

Hey, so did I. Ryan is a year older than I am. I always saw him as a hard worker and a good guy.

Wow, completely speechless. We're not talking Matt Cooke or Sean Avery or Kenny Linesman here.

I wouldn't even want those guys to get their skulls crushed in on a cheapshot like that.

No doubt about it. You can see him tracking Smith before he cut to the net. He knew Smith couldn't see him coming and was going to lay him out.

If Ryan Smyth wasn't an Oiler no one would be trash talking him. He wasn't a rat. He's one of the very few Oilers I can't hate. I'll gladly mock him at times (in good fun) for his mullet or crying, but he's a great person who loves the game. Hate to see a guy like that get hurt.

Same here. And having grown up with him in Banff and watching him work so hard to get to where he got was pretty incredible. I bawled my face off in pride watching him get his Olympic gold medal in 2002, and felt horrible for him when he cried in that press conference. He's a good guy, hope he's okay.

That's like saying that we wouldn't trash talk Rommel if he wasn't a Nazi! But he was! Rommel was a Nazi! And Smyth was on the Oilers!

Truth be told, after all is said and done (and that he's retired) I did always kind of like the guy (as much as I could like a guy on the Oilers). I cheered for him on Team Canada almost every spring, so I guess it rubbed off.

The Nazis were before my time so not sure if I would have kind of liked The Desert Fox, but I definitely wouldn't have cheered for them every year. They were a terrible bunch. Awful!

All nonsense aside, goddamn that was a dirty play. Sickening. Gotta wonder what was he thinking. Hopefully they punt him out of the league.

No one would expect a winger to come in like that too. Completely out of position and head hunting only. No reason for sheen to even be down that low on the play.

Don't be so arrogant as to presume you speak for everyone.

Smyth was as much a greasy player as Tomas Holmstrom was. Both guys were allowed to blatantly cheat for years and I don't have a great deal of respect for either as a result.
