I completely hated all Calgary media that day that he was brought back, and they snickered. They couldn't see what Darryl saw - sure, Jokinen and Iginla didn't gel in the way it was hoped, but Jokinen made a lot of room for Iginla. After the trade, Iginla was double-teamed and zeroed-in on.
At any rate, like him or not, he bought into Brent Sutter's idea of changing his game completely around, and did what was asked of him. Good character to boot.
Who doesn't smile when they remember: "Does your cat do singing?"
Wish him the best of luck in retirement.

Always one of my favorite players despite his lack of success here.
What 'lack of success' are you talking about?
236 GP
59 G
106 A
165 PTS
Those are damn good numbers, especially on mediocre Calgary teams. Furthermore, he played all 6 of his NHL playoff games here, and put up 30+ assists in both full seasons he played here.
Jokinen was criminally underrated. It's a crying shame he didn't get more of a chance to prove himself in the playoffs.

Lol can't believe this post got thanked so many times. There is a reason Jokinen hasn't played many playoff games and he is a big reason for that.
His numbers don't mean crap, he was one of the most disappointing players to come to Calgary after being so highly touted.
He disappeared in big games and it was addition by subtraction the moment he left. Twice. No heart, no defense and little hockey IQ. All the tools and no toolbox.
Let's not pretend Jokinen was good here. Weren't you like 9 years old when he was here? I've literally watched every single game Jokinen ever played as a Flame and he was average at best.
He wasn't a great fit with Jarome unfortunately, but there were times when he was part of our most consistent and best lines on both ends of the puck.
I'll have to agree to disagree. Thought jokinen's second stint was a disaster despite him getting more points. I believe Brent was the coach one season and heavily relied on him too much and he clearly couldn't handle it. He did find his groove offensively but I'll always maintain a team with a center who has low hockey IQ who plays as many minutes as Jokinen did will never go anywhere in the playoffs or might not even qualify for the playoffs.
He had 6 career NHL playoff games and had to be traded to a playoff bound team to even get a taste of the playoffs.
I don't think he was under appreciated at all.

Yep. I admit I was a whiny baby for Jokinen tour 2.0, but the man loved it in Calgary. To be fair, it was around that time I was pining away for the rebuild.
The first time the Flames acquired Jokinen I was one if the happiest fans around. Sitter traded for an elite center finally!
But I also admit I was quick to be first in line waving him goodbye too. Except for when he did the big Mac interview. Then I didn't care if he sucked, that was such a cool finn guy thing to say.
Happy retirement Ollie, as enigmatic as you were, you were a good Flame.

I also don't think it's necessarily fair to say he wasn't a big game player either considering he didn't get to play in many due to being on a lot of not great teams. 54 game winners over his career, scored the tying and winner in the Olympic bronze medal game in 2010.
I think all things considered he was actually quite clutch.
In his last 2 seasons here, of his 40 goals:
13 were in the 3rd period
13 tied the game
9 were go-ahead goals
I think a lot of the negative backlash he got was because he was ultimately the lightning rod for fans during a frustrating stretch of seasons for the Flames.

Jokinen the person was awesome, one of my favorite players off the ice. Jokinen the player was another story.
Good guy in the room. He had this great bit where he would sneak in to the team shower when everyone was gone and leave a plastic bag. No idea what he has been up to since he decided to hang them up.

Yeah, because he spent his prime on a #### Florida team.
It's almost like you're getting Bouwmeester and Jokinen confused. 2005-2008 Jokinen was an absolute beast. Blaming him for missing the playoffs? That's quote easily one of the worse analysis I've ever heard on any sports forum about anything.
2005-2006 Florida Panther stats:
Jokinen - 38-51-89
38 year old Nieuwendyk 26-30-56
Stumpel - 15-37-52
He was literally outscoring his next closest teammates by 30+ points, there's only so much one player can do.
At least 2002 Iginla had someone like Conroy.
