Korean cuisine has some of the most delicious, comforting, hearty soups and stews.

Budae Jigae (aka Army Stew)
- named after a stew that was concocted with random canned/preserved/instant foods, such as SPAM, hot dogs, kraft singles, canned beans, instant ramen, mixed with vegetables, spicy korean soup base, sliced rice cakes and tofu. This is one of my favorite stews. It's spicy, hearty, savoury. Perfect for a cold day.

Gamjatang (aka Pork Bone Soup)
- pork neck/back bones cooked for hours to create a rich, hearty and spicy broth, combined with potatoes, vegetables. Served piping hot in a stone or clay bowl, served with a side of rice. The pork bones are fall of the bone tender. Topped with ground up parilla seeds (similar to sesame seeds), this soup is my personal favorite.

Vietnamese soups are also some of my favorites. Obviously, pho is a must, and it's already been mentioned a few times, but here are some other Vietnamese soups that I like that my not be as common:

- Bun Bo Hue: spicy broth usually cooked with beef, pig trotters, congealed pork blood, meatballs, and lemon grass, served with thicker rice vermicelli noodles.

- Canh chua cá - Vietnamese sour fish soup. My mom makes this with lots of dill, bamboo shoots, okra, whole fish, pickled greens, lemongrass, tomatoes, tamarind, and garlic. It's delicious served over rice and shredded lettuce.

You simultaneously lured me in and repulsed me with every one of those soups.

Bun Bo Hue is pretty much all I eat at Pho places now. Most of the ones in Calgary don't have the blood cubes, but when it does, it's nowhere near as gross as it sounds. It's just a really rich lump basically.

I'm Chinese. We eat anything with four legs except for chairs and tables lol

You would find the same if not worse in hot dogs.

Most restaurants don't have blood cubes or pig trotters. The best is home made, but song huong has the legit bun bo hue

There was\is a place downtown on 4th and 5th I think. We called it Tonys because of the guy that ran it. He had this spicy tomato and sausage soup that just amazing. Every time I ordered it I would ask for the recipe and he would always joke that he forgot it at home again.
Anyways he retired and left it to his family. I guess he forgot to give them the recipe as well because it was not anywhere as good as when he made it. I still have dreams about that soup.

That pozole does look wonderful. Some of the best soups I've ever had have been in Mexican restaurants.

Simple Simon makes some frozen soups that are pretty good. Spicy Thai Chicken, Chicken noodle, and Turkey and Wild Rice are all good. I know some of their frozen pies are available at Co-Op, I'm not sure if the soup is, I've always gotten it at the Farmer's Market.

yeah but they're closed for an indeterminate amount of time. Their raw beef salad was crazy good too.

The best soup I've ever had to this date is from a small restaurant in the rural south of France that used only locally farmed ingredients and specialized in "slow food"...whatever that is. It was a butternut squash veloute with saffron and garlic foam.

I know that description makes it sounds super pretentious...and it kind of was...but my god, what an incredibly delicious soup. I've never had anything like it.

Looking for a Calgary restaurant that makes the best Hot and Sour soup. The fully decked-out hot and sour that has stuff like tiger lily buds and wood ear fungus in it. Too many places skip the more exotic ingredients.

I love all sorts of soup and it's probably my favorite food. But when I say that, I include things like pho, congee and chili which to me aren't soups technically, but because they're "liquid" I sort of include them. Italian wedding, split pea, chowder or completely different but still awesome are traditional Chinese soups which my mom makes... So good.
