Default Home Renovation Query

Bear in mind I am not exactly a handyman...

Had the bathroom finished in our basement, and have belatedly realized we may have a problem. Aside from one of the the under sink cupboard doors not opening due to...oh nevermind that one, oops.

Anyway, the exhaust fan is piped into the furnace room.

We are told it should go outside.

Is there something, ie a charcoal filter, that could go on the end of the pipe or do we have to drill through the foundation to vent?

How important is the fan?

Thanks in advance.

The bathroom fan helps with controlling humidity in the bathroom, which helps prevent mold. Other than that it is mostly a minor annoyance, I don't have a fan in my current bathroom and the only time I notice it is when I have had tacos the night before.

As for drilling through your foundation, it shouldn't be needed. Should be able to get through your wall above the foundation, between your floor joists.

Should "always" go outside. It's code.

Basically a bathroom should either have a window or a fan (ideally both) for ventilation.

If you haven't paid the installer, don't. Not until he re-routes it.

I did my own last year when we put in the bathroom. You need to run it to the outside for sure. Mine came out high enough on the outside that I could just cut through the siding and cap it.
