Not that it discounts your point, but in all instances where I have done a direct comparison, any hardware better than P4 1.6 GHz with 512 MB of RAM, Windows 7 has outperformed Windows XP. There are some minor hardware issues with lacking drivers, but in this case that won't be an issue.

Point is, if you are going to spend the time to rebuild a PC to make it run better, you might as well put Windows 7 on it. Especially if it is for gaming, because in my limited gaming experience, some newer games like (or require) DirectX 10, which is only available in Vista/7

Right on - I knew that Windows 7 was more efficient than Vista (anything is), but wasn't sure of the min requirements. I thought about mentioning it but wasn't sure.
