Yeah, that's a great target - a goalie who failed to live up to expectations so now the pressure is off.

He would be fine as the backup for a season or two. He's not starting goaltender material.

Bernier actually lived up to expectations outside of a short stretch in late 2015. Toronto was just an awful team that got otplayed every night.

I'm not crazy about Bernier but let's call a spade a spade.

Fleury is not a realistic choice but seems to be the popular one anyway

Please explain what is unrealistic about Fleury as a starting goalie in Calgary in 2017-18?

He is more than probably not going to remain in Pittsburgh.

Hmmm.

Looking at Bernier's numbers, and like you said, outside of his time in Toronto he has actually performed very well. This last season in Anaheim was solid, but much like Devan Dubnyk who required a year of rehabilitation after his soul was destroyed in Edmonton, he could be a good candidate to rediscover the form that once made him one of the best emerging, young goalies in the NHL.

If you like goalies who let in at least one team-deflating goal a game; Bernier is the goalie for you!

He doesn't have the level of concentration to play a starter's game. He easily gets distracted by bird sounds, squirrels and Nelson Mandela hockey superstar highlights.

Like I said, I am not all that persuaded that his time in TO is a good indication of his ability as a goalie in the long run. The Leafs were so bad for so long it is no wonder if his confidence was shattered.

As a TML fan I would expect your opinion to be sufficiently jaded.

Wow, some of those goals look like 1990s EA sports AI quality.

The problem with highlight and lowlight video compilations is that they are cherrypicked to support certain narratives. And like I said, I don't know if Bernier's time in TO is a good indicator of how good or bad he is as a goalie in the long run. When he played in LA and when he was with Manchester in the AHL I would imagine that he produced some pretty impressive highlight videos.

Calgary may not be the most likely destination for Fleury but you never know. I think it's more realistic that he's in Calgary than a few other names on the list. Even if Calgary is on his No-Trade list he may be convinced to waive to come here if we're given the opportunity to speak with him.

I am pretty sure it has been reported that Calgary is on Fleury's list of 18 teams to which he would approve a trade.

Unless the Flames trade for a younger goalie they are going to have to find one who wants to play here. I'd imagine that is a pretty short list.

Those "no-trade" lists aren't always a showstopper anyway. Regehr had one that included Buffalo, but they were able to convince him.

It just means that Fleury would need to approve the trade. The list may have also been made when the team was at a different stage in the rebuild.

Yeah. Thats a stunning amount of bad goals especially given he only played 3 seasons. I'm stunned he got to play that much for the Leafs giving up so many freebee's to opposing teams.

Darren Haynes is pretty well connected. He wrote this a week ago.

Raanta, Korpisalo, Grubauer, MAF are the four I would be interested in bringing in.

Not necessarily to be "the" guy (except MAF), but to have as an option and give us another dart to throw at the board along with our developing prospects.

I'm not huge on any of the vets and given our situation I wouldn't mind having a couple of not quite proven guys with upside and talent vying for the spot next season. Better than having guys over 30 that will have little to no room left for growth, and if they flop it just looks and feels worse.

I hate to make Talbot comparisons, but that's essentially what the Oilers did, and (very) fortunate for them it paid off.
