I think he has a big season next year. No contract distraction, not learning a new system, hungry to bounce back. He had a decent season last year but not to his standard.

I don't get why we would even think about trading him

If I were to make a list of things I'm the least worried about on this team, Johnny is near the top

From November 6 to April 2 Johnny had 54 points in 56 games. (16g/38a)

People are always looking for a reason with him, even Flames fans. It's weird.

Last year it was his home/road splits.

"Johnny can't score on the road. They've figured out how to match up Johnny to shut him down. Trade him while his value is still high."

Well that excuse went out the window this season as he evened his home and road splits right out.

It feels way too early to be saying this, but I really hate the offseason.

Two things happening can definitely help improve my mood:

1. Johnny has a great WHC tourney
2. Ducks eliminate the Oilers

maybe the question should be did people overestimate johnny's developmental progress and ceiling?

people had him beating Mcdavid in scoring (some had him as a better player, too) and maybe hitting 100 points.
I don't think maybe people expected him to be under a point per game and so invisible in the playoffs, and at times so predictable in his play.

maybe the question should be what do you expect from johnny next season. do people still see that 100point player, or is he going to be a 70 point player?
I don't think many reasonable people were expecting him to become more than a ppg player. With the benefit of seeing a few years of Johnny Hockey, it's a stretch to think he will be a 100 point player considering how few 100 point players there are each year.
I think there's a good chance he sits around .85-1.00 for his career.

Holdout + Injury and he managed solid totals. It's not as bad of a year as you were making it out to be.
No not nearly as bad of a season as people like to make it seem. What I do find concerning is his diminished assertiveness with the puck in general. I'll chalk it up to an off year and hope he comes back as the dynamic, high flying Johnny we enjoyed in his fist two seasons.

I expect there to be some ebb and flow in the first few years of his career. I'm quite confident that Gaudreau will be just fine, and will respond well next year to whatever scouting adjustments effected his game this past year.
