Default GMs recommend giving a penalty for failed Coach's Challenge on offsides

The NHL GMs met today for their annual pre-draft meeting and one of the recommendations was to change the punishment for a failed offside challenge to a 2 minute penalty instead of the loss of a timeout.

Quote:
Elliotte Friedman‏ @FriedgeHNIC

The NHL is looking at a penalty for an incorrect Coach's Challenge. Colin Campbell: "You better be sure" when you challenge.
The GMs recommendation has to first go to the Competition Committee, then get approved by the Board of Governors. There is hope that if this has support, it will be implemented by the start of next season.

If approved by the BOG, this change should greatly reduce the number of offside challenges we see during the season. It should especially eliminate the "Hail Mary" challenges where the coach uses it more as a way to get a longer timeout after a goal.

For example, does Pittsburgh challenge the Subban goal in Game One of the Final if they're risking being shorthanded for two minutes while Nashville has all the momentum?

This change would only apply to offside challenges and not to challenges for Goalie Interference.

I still hate the whole offside challenge idea, but this would be a minor improvement to a bad rule.

poor Glen. Already the most penalized team in the league, and now this.

EDIT: or not, since it doesn't apply to goalie interference.

The idea that the refs review the challenge is the worst part. As if the refs are going to overthrow their call to look dumb in front of thousands of peering eyes and ears. Should be Toronto, so stupid.

Reviewing offside is a terrible idea to begin with. The linesmen are gonna catch any players who are breaking the spirit of the offside rule, so we're just combing over fractions of an inch in super slow motion. Waste of time...and takes away goals in a goal starved league.

What they really need is to do a better job defining the blue line. If the goal line is a plane that extends upward, the blue line should be as well. If a skate would be ruled onside on the ice, it's stupid if it's offside because the skate was slightly off the ice. Especially since there's no real way to determine if the skate was or wasn't in the air.

Polishing a turd. The offside reviews are a failure and should be scrapped completely. The ridiculous delays over millimeters are a waste of time and not worth it for the one time per season where an obvious offside leads to a goal.

It defeats the purpose already. Just make the blue line concrete, things will be clear. The puck will even slows down for you.

I like this idea of a penalty. Game is being slowed by too many of these challenges. Plus you had coaches using it as a way of not using their official time out.

They'll call back a goal because of a couple of millimetres at the blue line, yet they give them an extra two feet at centre and not call it icing. The offside challenge is stupid.

Delighted to hear but how about the NHL actually steps up and decides that a players skate in the air doesn't offset him being onside or offside. That crap is lame the player is in stride it should be where is the puck in relation to the players positioning and stride.
At least we can take solace the league is recognizing many coaches just abused the coaches challenge taking a wild swing to see if they could get goals called off. It ruined the flow and outcomes of several games.

These rules within rules are getting irritating.

They are admitting it's a flawed rule to begin with by even suggesting this, so instead of getting rid of it entirely they propose to make it more complex??

This league can be such a joke sometimes.

I don't like the idea of getting a penalty for an incorrect challenge - the loss of your only time-out is enough, IMO, as that means only 1 wrong challenge per game.

If I were to tweak the rule, the one change would be to add an "Incidental Offside" caveat, where the player going offside had nothing to do with the ultimate goal, like when they cross the blue line, cycle the puck for 20 seconds, then score.

Beyond that, the rule is OK. It should be a reviewable call, the standard should be to get it right (so a millimeter offside is offside), and, after going back and forth on this, I don't think you can extend the blue line vertically like a plane, as you don't want to encourage players to wave their skates around in the air.

Once in a while it will take some time to determine a call (and this will be reduced as more 4K cameras get rolled out), and in those cases, so be it, IMO.

Well I'm going to take a completely different stand than other people.
I think you should be able to challenge any call but it has to be conclusive to overturn the call on the ice and an unsuccessful challenge results in a 2min delay of game penalty. Then put a maximum of 2 or 3 unsuccessful challenges per game just to make sure a coach doesn't go off the deep end and cause havok in the last minutes if he's pissed off. Only the obvious missed calls are going to get challenged, nobody is going to challenge an offside that is "millimeters".
