I'm piecing together a consensus rankings update for The Hockey Writers right now. Aside from Patrick and Liljgren, there's no consensus in the first round at all.

from what i have watched, which admittedly isn't a ton of the likely 1st rounders, I would agree. Reminds me quite a bit of 2012 where the first couple guys were just okay, and then after that it was a complete coin flip. I remember that year having a hard time keying in on a particular player I liked for the Flames pick until I saw Janko play for the first time.

It also largely depends on where the Flames are picking too. If the Flames are picking around 20, Cal Foote (Adam Foote's son) might be the best option due to his physicality as a D-man, something we've lacked since Reggie.

Honestly, I would not be opposed to trading the 1st if it meant acquiring a good young player under the age of 26. Say like Landeskog.

He's back!

Quote:
Nolan Patrick is back.

And he didn’t take long to leave an impression.

Patrick, first in Future Considerations’ Winter ranking for the 2017 NHL Draft, had two goals and two assists for the Brandon Wheat Kings in his return after missing 35 games because of an unspecified upper-body injury.

“It’s just nice to be back out there,” said Patrick, who rehabbed the injury with former Atlanta Thrashers forward JP Vigier back in Winnipeg. “It’s never fun watching, so being back and getting a win on the first night back is obviously pretty nice.

“My energy felt better than I was expecting and my legs felt good, so that’s obviously a bonus.”

nhl.com writers do two mock drafts.

The Flames pick at #20.

Adam Kimelman's mock draft has the Flames picking 5'7'' RW Kailer Yamamoto

Mike Morreale's mock draft has the Flames picking Timothy Liljegren at 20. Liljegren was at one point considered the best d-man in the draft, but his draft stock is going down the drain similar to Kylington in 2015

It's funny how the Preds pick at 11, and the Flames pick at 20.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen looks to be the first goaltender in the draft. Not hard to guess where he comes from with a name like that.

Not a chance Liljegren drops to 20. I'd be fine with Yamamoto at 20.

Ya I don't see how he drops out of the top 10, maybe in a deeper draft but no way this year, probably in all likelihood he still goes top 5.

Central Scouting just bumped him down to their 7th ranked European prospect.

Every year there is one or two defensemen that seem to take a bit of a free fall in the rankings. Liljegren might be one of those defensemen this year. He hasn't played much, so if he does play more in the second half here and play well he could very well regain his top 5 spot, but as it stands I think other players have just pushed him out of the way.

I think defensemen are almost becoming like goaltenders in the 1st round, it is harder to predict what they will be like in the NHL and it takes longer for them to reach their full potential so teams are shying away from them in the 1st round more and more. At least that is my view on it, I could be way off.

Klim Kostin's KHL team has announced he will miss the rest of the season with an injury.

If he wasn't a wild card before with the Russian factor, with 0pts in 8 games in the KHL will be interesting to see how high he goes in the draft.

Teams will have to base their decision on the Hlinka tournament and the WJAC.

That will be great, I want Nico Hischier or Owen Tippett. Nickle it in for Nico or trip it for Tippett.

If the Flames end up drafting top 5 they need one of the top 2 picks. This draft is suppose to be really weak after the top 2.

To anyone: Pretty sure I know the answer, but if the Flames end up drafting middle of the pack (lets say the order is frozen today), would you be at all upset if the pick is traded a la 2015?

If the Flames are picking anywhere from 12-22 I think there would be more value in dealing it.

Anything earlier than that, it would depend on exactly where the pick lands.

Im open to trading it if they Flames fall out of the top 3 or you put together a package for Nolan Patrick. Looking at that mock draft if the Avs get Patrick that's going to suck.

It seems like Patrick is going to be playing in the West.
