An expansion team in our division working extra hard to make sure they're less competitive? I'm all for it.

Meh, they're going to suck so bad it will hardly effect the standings. Free points for everyone.
It does decrease the chance of Vancouver getting high picks so that's a plus.

Important to look at context
1) LH shot
2) Older (Just turned 32)
3) More expensive and shorter contract (4.9m for 2 more years)
4) Apparently did not want to be traded to most /all Canadian teams

Lets see
Methot is 5 years older, a little more then 1 million/year more expensive albeit for 1 less year, played with arguably the best Dman in the league and Vegas has 12 defenceman so not dealing from a strong position on this one. I don't think the 2 moves can be compared at all.

Methot is not exactly cheap for defensive defenseman.

Yea seems like McPhee is trading all his cows for magic beans and hopes 1 of them grow a beanstalk.

I thought the NHL wanted the Vegas team to be somewhat competitive, they are gonna stink to high heaven.

I would be pissed if I were Bettman. The NHL gave Vegas every chance to not suck but nope, they gonna suck big time.

So Neal for Klimchuk and whatever random guy we picked in the 4th or later this year?

Mason McDonald would get that deal done.

yup. When the protected lists came out, I thought they'd be able to build a pretty competitive team (especially compared to earlier expansion teams), but with some of the deals they've made it's highly unlikely they'll win a lot of games. Tons of picks and futures, but the on-ice product is going to be really bad for a couple of years for sure.

Good points. Still can't shake the feeling that we overpayed though. That was my initial instinct and I still feel that way now despite having a few days to digest it. Hopefully the team crushes it next season and it's a low pick. That would certainly be the best case scenario.

Wow, maybe McPhee is a smarter guy than me but I don't see how he passed on so many good players just to get more darts to throw at the board. Really taking 'building from the draft' literally.

Cleary there were better offer for Methot but LV is just stupid and took a lower offer!

I find it disappointing, I really wanted to follow Vegas fairly closely but the way the roster is shaping up, not sure I'll bother.

Yeah I was pretty excited to watch the birth of a new franchise, but if the plan is to lose hard and acquire pics I don't have a whole lot of interest. There was definitively enough talent available to have fielded a partially decent team.
It's like McPhee is a cylon.
McPhee: I have a plan.
Narrator (Ron Howard): He didn't.

That's it? McPhee seems to have really outsmarted himself picking all those D to trade. He should've just kept his seven best guys and forced the rest through waivers at the start of the season. That way, the best assets would be retained and grow in value when everyone in the league can't hold the number of waiver-eligible of Dmen against him. At the deadline, Methot would've surely gone for much more, maybe even a pick in this decade.
Methot just returned around the same as Brian Boyle. Think about that for a second.

Yeah it's crazy that Ottawa didn't match that or more.
Also seems like he could have waited a little longer to trade one of his most valuable pieces.

Pretty standard for most people visiting Vegas.

After Methot was selected he couldn't be traded back to Ottawa until January 2018 I believe.
