Does Lance Bouma have a future playing for the Calgary Flames?
This has been discussed in a few threads already so I figured I'd start one.
Does Lance Bouma have a spot on the Flames next year? With Flames management and Kris Versteeg having apparent mutual interest in a new contract, and Treliving's statement regarding bringing back Alex Chiasson today, how does this relate to Bouma's future in Calgary?
Here are the Flames' signed wingers for next season (bolded played in the NHL last year):
J. Gaudreau
M. Tkachuk
M. Frolik
T. Brouwer
L. Bouma
D. Pribyl
H. Shinkaruk
M. Klimchuk
E. Poirier
R. Lomberg
A. Mangiapane
A. Carroll
H. Smith
And here are the Flames' free-agent wingers:
K. Versteeg
M. Ferland
C. Lazar
A. Chiasson
G. Hathaway
B. Bollig
Here are Bouma's NHL totals from his four full seasons:
16-17: 61 GP, 3 G, 4 A, 7 PTS, -2, 35 PIM, 11:21 ATOI, 127 Hits, 5.7 S%, -5.8% rel Corsi
15-16: 44 GP, 2 G, 5 A, 7 PTS, -6, 31 PIM, 12:02 ATOI, 115 Hits, 4.1 S%, -4.2% rel Corsi
14-15: 78 GP, 16 G, 18 A, 34 PTS, +10, 54 PIM, 14:01 ATOI, 264 Hits, 15.4 S%, -4.5% rel Corsi
13-14: 78 GP, 5 G, 10 A, 15 PTS, -4, 41 PIM, 12:36 ATOI, 181 Hits, 6.1 S%, -4.8% rel Corsi
Bouma makes $2.2 million until the end of 2017-18.

I just don't think he is better than Freddie Hamilton, Matt Stajan, Morgan Klimchuk, Andrew Mangiapane, Ryan Lomberg, or a slew of LWs available on waivers during pre-season.
Gotta bury the emotion, at this point. 5 goals over the last 100+ games seasons is horrible even for a fourth liner.

Nope. Garnet Hathaway already replaced what he gave us. He's playing for a job with another team this year. Hopefully it motivates him.

Unfortunately for Boums, I do not see a spot for him on the roster. He has been passed by a few guys. He's been a good soldier for us for some years.

A couple of injuries to wingers, a kid needing some extra time in the AHL... Maybe Lazar is a bust. Stuff can happen. He's also playing for the continuation of his career, the desperation might bring something extra out of him.
Honestly though, I'd say he's more likely to play zero games than more than 20.

He did some good things in the past but now he is just taking up a roster spot.

He blocks a lot of shots but doesn't add much else, and is injured way too often.
I'd bury him in the minors and hope he can at least be a veteran role model to some of our younger players.

Yes. The team is going to get off to way better start than last year and Bouma will be a fixture in the bottom 6 helping contribute to wins. His playoffs in 2018 will be enough to get another NHL contract too (maybe not with the Flames though).

Bouma-Colborne-Comeau would be a formidable line for the Avs.

If Bouma has a bad training camp or pre-season he better find a place in Stockton.

Peaked at the wrong time for this team and sadly the style of game he played has a very short shelf life.
Although i still'm holding out hope that it's just his injuries the last two years that made it all go off the rails, and he comes out with a bang in training camp and the pre-season, because I absolutely LOVE the guy. But if he comes out flat, you have to move on.

It was the most success this team has had since 2004. and Bouma helped set the tone for a fun season. Lots of fans will remember him fondly, and he got $6.6M out of it.
There are a lot worse timings to have that one career year.
