As getbak just mentioned, age may very well have something to do with it.
Like the Oilers Yamamoto, Valimaki will only have one more year in juniors before he goes pro as he will be turning 20 next October.
Seems like a good pick to me though. His scouting report from redline reads like he's Lidstrom.

With the 16th OA pick, the Flames select D Juuso Valimaki
I was going to ask the same thing. In what was supposedly not the greatest of drafts, I'm not totally understanding why Juuso goes 16th, even with the age consideration. His NHL equivalency figures really surprised me, and it seems like the sort of pick that would definitely be more top 10ish, even in a quality draft.
...Did he do one pull-up?

Listening to Todd Button, I'm pretty sure the Flames would have made this selection even if they had the 10th overall pick!

FWIW, a Red Wings fan I know was livid when they picked Rasmussen at #9 because he desperately wanted Valimaki.
Seems like this draft was very open between 5 and 20 or so. Pretty much came down to preference, and I believe the Flames were a bit lucky. Again.

The fact that they could have had Liljegren but took valimaki instead speaks volumes.

It really wasn't a bad draft. Just didn't have the top 2 potential the last 2 drafts had.

Maybe. Button did say they had him top 11. If we're picking 10th though I think someone in their top 8 might've fallen to them and they'd be gushing about another kid. I mean the top 15 kids on their list are probably all worth gushing about. They really like all of them!
At 10th I think Vilardi might've been the pick. Or Necas

confirmed, Valimaki could play in AHL next season, but looks like Flames want him in WHL:
Kristen Odland @Kristen_Odland
Also, 16th overall pick Juuso Valimaki could technically play in the #AHL next year but Treliving "fully anticipates" he'll be back in #WHL.

Nice. With the probable graduation of Parker Wotherspoon that #1 LD spot should belong to Valimaki. Let him be the guy for them in all situations next season. Anticipate watching him in the WJC too.

Has Tri-City developed any NHL players lately?

Looks like tri-cities might be preparing for Valimaki to play in the AHL, they picked two new imports in the draft:
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/sports...158765124.html
Whl team can only have two imports and teams often pass on picking new ones in the draft if they already have those slots filled and they won't be bringing them over from what I've seen. The Amerks have 4 imports now with Valimaki, an overage russian kid and their 2 new picks so to me this says they might not be expecting him back.

Is Juuso Välimäki eligible to play in the AHL? Drafted out of the CHL.

Yes, he is -- sureLoss has mentioned it in a few threads. It's due to some sort of loan agreement, but I don't know the specifics.

If Valimaki could play in the AHL next year and have a successful season that would be pretty damn impressive. Excited for this kid

So then a Välimäki signing must be imminent, given Tri-Cities was apparently tipped off in advance? You'd think the Flames would've advised them.
That's interesting news!

Haven't the flames said he was going back to tri-cities? I swear I read that a few days ago.
