The lengths the AHL goes to save money is ridiculous.

Is the AHL profitable on it's own?

it's more about teams not wanting their prospects constantly on the bus instead of getting ice/gym time.

That is what's out there for public consumption but I don't really buy it. Most games are on weekends and flying to Texas vs. bus ride to NoCal doesn't really impact practice and gym time IMO.

Freeway interview with Huska

https://flamesnation.ca/2017/05/15/a...ch-ryan-huska/

I don't want to throw Huska under the bus here but with his contract up, I would love it if we brought in NCAA coaches Rick Bennett or Nate Leaman. They coach the style of play I think will translate to the AHL and hopefully further.

Things I didn't know:

Hunter Smith broke his jaw
Daniel Pribyl had hip surgery

Both will be ready to go in the fall

I kind of figured Smith wasn't a healthy scratch. He was more than solid this year and I expect big things from him next year and in the future.

Hopefully Pribyl can put his injury issues behind him as well. I liked his play when I was able to watch him.

I don't like that Pascal is quick to support and praise Huska. I haven't been that impressed with Huska during his tenure. One playoff round in two seasons and some up and down performances from players and the team isn't enough for a thumbs up in my opinion.

I am not sure if Huska is a good coach or not (I lean more towards the not myself as well), but I would be shocked if Pascal said anything other than praise his coach at the moment. Besides, what is often the kiss of death for a coach? When his GM publicly stands behind him. We as fans never know if that support is mere platitudes to an outgoing coach, or real praise directed at a guy they want to lock-up for another 3 years.

Anything other than praise (even a no comment, or in any way avoiding praise) and the media pick up on this and rumors start to circulate. I would be shocked if Pascal didn't go out of his way to praise Huska at this point.

I think many look too much at wins in the AHL when it has been said by both Treliving and Pascal that the most important thing is the ability to teach the players to be a pro both on and off the ice. Yes, wins measure a teams success but does not measure individual success.

I am quite please with what Huska has been able to accomplish with the teams he has been provided. It is no surprise the first year he actually has some talent on the team he makes the playoffs.

I love the progress our best crop of prospects in the past 17 years has made under the guidance of Huska.

If he is not renewed, I will be surprised if he isn't snatched up fairly quickly.

Dyukov won't be back per his agent, was signed to an AHL deal last season but spent most of the time in the ECHL

Dan Milstein-Hockey @HockeyAgent1
Roman Dyukov formerly with Calgary Flames organization signed with Dinamo Minsk of KHL.

I'm glad Bollig was on the farm. Sounds like he really took to the "grizzled AHL vet" role like a fish to water.

Devane has signed with the Kings farm team, with Bollig also potentially gone, likely Flames look for a veteran AHL tough guy to help protect the younguns

He played in the UK last season. Northern California has to be better than that.

Tweeted this earlier, but Kayle Doetzel has re-upped with Heat on an AHL deal.
