They're basically polar opposites. If you ignore last season, Hamonic is somewhat above average in shot generation from his team while on the ice, while being slightly below average in shot suppression. Larsson is the exact opposite - fewer shots for, but fewer shots against. Hamonic has also traditionally eaten more minutes than Larsson.

Fox

I honestly think we are under-rating him because he is a small d-man. The resume this guy has put up is unheralded - really he is our d-man version of Johnny Gaudreau.

US National Development Team: Highest scoring season by a d-man ever.

U-18 World Championship: Named tournament top d-man.

Harvard: Led all NCAA d-men in scoring as a freshman. The highest PPG in a season by a U-19 aged d-man in the NCAA since Bryan Leetch in 1986/87.

World Juniors: 4 points as an under age d-man and a gold medal.

Sure he is small but the numbers he has put up are unprecedented. At the same age he has outproduced guys like Werenski and McAvoy who look like studs right now. Or look at the similarly sized Gostisbehere who never did anything close to Fox at those levels.

He may never pan out but giving up on him now would be a big mistake based on his results so far.

It is not just his size. The reason a number of people are not sold on Fox is because of the combination of his below-average size and below-average skating. That is a combination that rightly causes some concern.

Of course, Larson has missed time with significant injuries before, including back problems which resurfaced last year, but because he has been mostly healthy for a couple years, no one will bring this up. Does anyone say Backlund is injury prone anymore? They would have when he was Hamonic's age. The whole "injury prone" thing is a recency based fallacy. Unless there is major reconstructive surgery involved at an advanced age, this doesn't bother me in the least.

Honestly I'm not sure why the skating concerns started to pop up.

Whenever I've watched him his skating looked fine. He's not explosive like Erik Karlsson but his edge work and lateral movement is great.

Even if you look at this draft year profiles they all seem to mention skating as a strength.

I've not noticed below average skating the times I've watched him play. What's wrong with it?

Jack Capuano was being interviewed on Sirius on my way into work - had nothing but glowing things to say about Hamonic, and said there were chunks of time last year when he was playing at 75% at best, but that he was a warrior who wanted to be out there helping his teammates.

I love this trade more and more as each day goes by. Travis Hamonic is making 200k less than Kris Russell for one fewer year. Stupid Oilers.

His acceleration or "separation" speed is average.

That is important in today's game, especially for a smaller man.

Could improve as he gets stronger or maybe, genetically, he doesn't have "fast twitch" muscle fibers.

Other than that, lots to like about him.

I love the Oiler fan salt of the past few days. They can't help but go back to the Hamilton trade and compare what we have up for Dougie and Hamonic to what they gave up for Reinhart and Larson. While Larson is at least in the same category as Hamilton or Hamonic, Reinhart is not and was lost in expansion.

Treliving inherited 2 great Dmen from Sutter's time in Calgary and has gone out at added 2 more to complete arguably the best top 4 in the league

According to TSN the Leafs were offering the Isles a 1st rounder +JVR and were surprised that Snow didn't bite.

Tre either really sold the value of the second rounders, or Snow didn't want to deal Hamonic to an Eastern Conference team.

Or they saw JVR as a complementary player and not worth the trade.
