Default That big house above Ed Worthy park

Weird question but I noticed that huge house up on the Hill above Edworthy Park is for sale (4.5 mill+).

I've always wondered what the deal is with this house - how were they able to acquire the property to build it? Why are no other homes up there?

One of my brother's clients owns one of those houses. Not sure if it's the one for sale but he paid over $1million to build a retaining wall.

I'd be scared to live there. Someone losing control on sarcee might fly through your roof.

I believe that land was privately owned from the time that area was part of the Cochrane ranch. The city acquired parts of that area that became Edworthy park, but that piece of land itself was never subdivided or resold.

There is definitely a reference to that piece of land in
"Communities of Calgary : from scattered towns to a major city" by Dorothy Nielson. It was originally part of the same section of land that was subdivided into Wildwood/Spruce Cliff. The library has a copy if you're interested in reading more.

Also, city council (in 1991) took the time to make that a direct control district, so that only single family houses on very large lots could be built there (it specifies various sizes, all >1 acre). Also, the existing plants can't be removed without the specific consent of the development officer.

I was told a while ago that the house was owned by the Hart family (Bret Hart, local wrestling family), no idea if it's true or not.

^^^ The big house? No. There are another 2 or 3 up there (not as big) and one was owned by the Hart family at some point of time.

Who was Ed Worthy? Why is a park named after him?

Edworthy

Edworthy Park was once a part of the Cochrane Ranch and was eventually purchased by Thomas Edworthy in 1883. Along side his neighbour John Lawrey, Edworthy established a profitable garden market that supplied fresh fruit and vegetables to railway crews and homesteaders. In later years, after discovering sandstone on his property, he operated sandstone quarries for the construction of many buildings in Calgary. The land was purchased by the City in 1962 for the development of a park.

The Hart house would be on the other side of Sarcee near the Olympic Condo's.
If I recall, they tried selling years back with no success and it is now rented out. Don't quote me on that though.

I have always wondered where access is to that house this thread is speaking of. Is it at the bottom of Sarcee and they drive up?

I used to be a Install/Repair tech with TELUS and actually had the install order for this place. You get to it by going through the Upper Edworthy parking lot, there's a gate at the end and a road that goes down towards the river. there are probably 5-6 houses in that area (or so) but like people said awesome awesome view of downtown and the valley. It was still under construction when I was there so I didn't get the full experience.

There are a couple of houses in a gated area west of Sarcee in the same road as the Hart house. All are huge/spectacular. One belonged to a member of the Singer family, not sure if it still does or not.
