Default Car broken into in Vancouver

Hey everyone,

So my car was just broken into in Vancouver (a few days after I moved back here ). In the place where you insert the key is a black hole (driver side). I can still lock the door from the inside but I also have to unlock it from the inside. Just a couple of questions...

Where's a cost effective place that I can fix this issue?

Furthermore, is there still a way that thieves can open the door with the damaged lock if its locked from the inside? I'm a poor student at the moment so if I can put off repairs for a little while, it would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I remember when the lock fell out of my car. Nobody broke into my car, it was just old and the hardware that held the lock in place deteriorated and broke. I was lucky to discover this when I went to unlock my car and not when I was driving and wondering what just fell off of my car (which also happened to me with that car... it was the washer pump).

I seem to remember that I could unlock the car from the outside. Depends on the age and make of the car too but with the right tool somebody will likely be able to get into the car.

I remember as a kid we had a van where one door had no lock in it and we figured out that if you stuck your finger in there was a little thing you could pull down to unlock the door. I don't remember what it was, but it was pretty trivial to do.

All older cars will have that. It's the reason why you can open them with a close hanger.

OP, the answer to your question is, you might need a close hanger or similar tool, but it has just become a lot easier to open your car.

I would just not leave valuables in your car, ever, and if necessary the trunk. I think people with totally spotless car interiors probably get broken into a lot less. Leave it unlocked, no damage if someone does break in, unless they are an idiot (I've heard of broken windows on unlocked cars).

clean everything out of your car leave glove box open etc so random crack heads can see it is all empty and you will have little chance of people breaking in to steal, if it is an older toyota or honda or chrysler with a plastic glow ring around the ignition it is very easy to steal and a favorite for joy riders.

The only issue with leaving a clean unlocked car is that it probably invites ladies of the night to use it as a temporary sex pad.

In which case, I would recommend installing a hidden GoPro.

Was that on the inside or outside of the Van's door?

I know a girl who's car turned into a hobo house when she was on vacation. They completely destroyed the interior and she ended up having it crushed.

It was a crappy old saturn. Someone must have been messed up in there, they melted the paneling with a lighter and ripped up the seats. A dude was sleeping in it when she got home and he said his friend gave it to him.

Are you sure your lock did not just dive out of the door?
