"Greasy" might be a better way to describe Smyth than "Dirty". Both in looks and behaviour. Probably 50-75 of his career goals would have been called back for goalie interference if he played under current replay review rules.
That said, his past playing style is well and truly irrelevant to what happened in this game.

Hope he's ok. Men's league hockey is field with some many wannabe's with such low self esteem you get #### like this all the time.

This isn't "Men's League" per se. This is Senior Men's AAA. It is years ahead of even the best beer leagues. I know the GM for the Generals, everyone of his guys played major junior with many playing minor pro. These boys can play. Also it is full contact.

I know what it is, I played senior men's many moons ago and there were meatheads then and meatheads now.

If it makes you feel better, Sheen is from Calgary originally.
Ha - I noticed that but wasn't going to say anything. He also played for Mount Royal University as well, which I have strong connections to. Weird parallels with this meathead.

Ya, greasy is it. If Smyth was a 'dirty rat' we need new superlatives for the original rat Ken Linesman and the all-time Oiler hatchet man Glenn Anderson.
Smyth was never dirty in the sense of Torres, Cooke etc. He was a rat in the way Tkachuk is and I don't think we around here have a problem with that. I hate the oilers with the best of them but Smyth was a beauty in his hay day. That little trick where he would bump the top of the goalies stick right before he got set was awesome. He knew what he was doing and was good at it.

I can accept that. I took it differently than you're describing.
greasy, sneaky I can accept, but I was thinking CsInMyBlood meant dirty as intentional cheap shots, intent to injure, etc.

I agree with you, he was greasy not dirty in the way CsIn expressed. I was actually a big Smyth fan, always called him the ultimate role player.
if you ever saw smyth play, you would know exactly what "dirty", sneaky, rat, etc means. to clarify, I don't think I ever saw or heard of an attempt to injure by ryan smyth. that wasn't his game, but skirting the rules certainly was. I guess it all depends upon your definition of the words and how they are attributed to a hockey game.
yeah, he broke the rules and he got away with it a lot. how many times can one player be "pushed" into the goalie butt first before it stops being an accident? exactly.
having said all of that, he played the way that he did and he got away with it and he retired and good luck to him. but let's not get all revisionist history here.
he is also a man with a family and a life, and likely always has been since I became aware of him.
hope that the incident is dealt with appropriately by the league.

I think this is the dirtiest thing I ever saw Smyth do.
It doesn't even really make any sense.
Violence did not come naturally to that man.
I wouldn't even call that dirty... more sticking up for yourself. The Czech defenseman had his stick up his junk the whole time, while Smyth is just trying to get it out, albeit very awkwardly.
I can speak from first hand experience when I played competitive, I used my stick as a defenseman in very similar circumstances. Not dirty, no intent to injure, and skirting the grey area, and I knew full well it drove any forward who I did that to up the wall. I was on the B side of many scrums from pulling this, so I completely get Smyth's reaction here.
