I like this deal. As much as I like Horak and Broissoit. Horak with the center depth we built wasn't going to pass Rhino or Colborne who has become a pretty solid guy. Horak was probably going to be that AHL call up guy, I'm happy he's going to an orgnaization with pretty much no centers. Broissoit was probably the key asset for the Oil, When you look at the Flames goalie depth for the future does he have the pedigree of Ortio or Gilles, probably not, but he's probably going to be a good young goalie.

The Flames bring back a pretty solid top 4 guy who can work with the younger guys coming in to the lineup and probably save our goalies lives.

For the Oilers this has to be a disturbing trade as they've dumped a vet for some second tier prospects. From listening to Duhatchek it sounds like there were problems between Eakins and Smid. The Oilers defense which was horrible just got a lot worse and this sounds like the start of a rebuild instead of the end of it.

I'm ok with it, it doesn't signal the end of a rebuild by any stretch and hopefully gives us a mentor type player that might be flippable at the deadline.

Its not a theft by either side.

Don't mind getting Smid - IMO, he was one of the better Oilers D. Don't like giving up Broissoit though. I don't understand this from an Edmonton perspective, unless they are clearing cap space for a big move...

I've always seen Smid as a good 3-4 defenseman and a tough guy to play against. I think he will fit in well in Calgary and fill a hole in our lineup.

Never change KLown - never change

@Lord_Bob Smid was acquired as a kid for the rebuild, then traded as a vet for more kids in the same rebuild.

Love the response over on the kiddie board.

Pretty much best Oiler dman for Calgary's crap prospects.

Looks like lots of fan of other teams wanted Smid.

Oilers are going after Bryzgalov:
Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 10s Oilers-Bryzgalov discussions escalating. Edmonton had to move Smid money to make room for goalie.

Smid is a low end top 4 d man so Flames get a good young piece

Oilers will now sign a train wreck known as Bryz who is not afraid to call out the circus whatever town he is in, and he's never seen a six ring circus

this is phenomenal

Consensus on HF is this was good for Calgary. That's a good sign considering HF generally loves all Oiler moves and hates all Calgary moves.
Then again HF is also terrible
So who knows.

I haven't freuqented on the forums during the summer, but this is an absolute fleecing by the Flames.

This trade has me on the brink of seperating my fandom from this team.

Smid is pretty much all you can ask from a heart and soul, tough defenseman. He isn't very mobile, but you just got gift-wrapped a a character guy like say a Ference in his prime for nothing.

The fact that MacT and Lowe have not only the balls to trade him within our division, but to the arch-rival is just treacherous and downright disgraceful. It's been rough, but this has to be the lowest of the lows for Oilers fans.

Congrats on receiving a player who plays with heart on his sleeve.

The Oilers reeling in Broissoit is also a massive PR move on their part as he was a fan fave with the oil kings.

Wow, Smid is only 27, I thought he was older then that. This becomes a really good trade for the Flames if he bounces back.

I realize, but we both know that Burke is going to make his own mark on the franchise, and this move has his paws all over it....and do you think Lowe lets MacTavish even take a piss before he asks?

Oh we got Olivier Roy too? Then its a pretty good trade in my books as Roy is their best goaltending prospect

I highly doubt that's true. I remember more people liking him than not because he sticks up for his teammates.

Smid has heart, so it's easy to see why he wasn't a fit as an Oiler. Let the hate flow through you.
