I know a girl that used to write for Avenue and left after a year because of what shoddy and lazy journalism it was. I always meant to ask her about these hilarious lists.

Avenue is essentially made up of new journalism grads that don't have the experience to get hired anywhere else. High turnover rate, writers with not much experience, that sort of thing. So I bet this list is compiled by a few kids in their early 20's that haven't actually experienced most of these neighborhoods, so do things like rank Forest Lawn high-ish because of it's proximity to downtown, and MacKenzie Towne low because it's not very central and has a traffic circle

Bayview has a 51/185 score for access to parks and pathways, even though its surrounded by the bike path on all three sides and literally half the community backs onto South Glenmore Park...

This happens every year -- people don't bother reading the methodology used to create the list. It's not just a subjective ranking based on the whims of a few writers. Avenue conducts a survey early in the year asking respondents to rate how important certain neighbourhood features are, like low crime, high walk score, property values, proximity to transit, nearby schools, etc. Then, based on the results of the survey, they objectively rank Calgary's neighbourhoods using actual data, like crime stats, property values, and so on. You don't have to have experienced most of these neighbourhoods to create this list. In fact, you don't even need to live in Calgary to follow their methodology.

If you disagree with the results, don't blame the writers; blame the people who completed the survey for valuing neighbourhood features differently than you do.

Well, whatever crappy rank this rag of a magazine gives our communities at least they're all still better than Airdrie.

They should put Airdrie in 186th spot next year just for the fun of it.

I like this list. Keeps community raters out of my community.

It's really like a kind of tinder on crack. Good on them. Let them fill their magazine with high end ads, from high end people that offer no value and are the who's who of nothing. Another group of people I want nothing to do with in this city.

The list is so pointless that they have really reached the point of complete disconnection with the masses of Calgary. They just need to fuse with upper Mount Royal, limit their distribution there and achieve success.

However, i do agree with the Forrest Lawn rating because of Popeye Chicken.

In fairness, we had a shooting at our 7-11 and then dead people I believe were left in a car at our Superstore, so Douglasdale is now 'the hood.'

Take that Forest Lawn!

I'm not sure it matters for the rankings, unless they left stuff out for their calculations:
Quote:
Crime: Data taken from Calgary Police Service statistical reports. Crimes in each neighbourhood from September 2015 to September 2016 were totalled.
Totalled? So, like, graffiti is the same as murder?

Wasn't Mahogany named the community of the year in 2015 or 2016? How the mighty have fallen. Now they are bottom 3 in Calgary.

Having lived in Bridlewod, Mission and Varsity, every single neighbourhood has it's pros and cons.

Hard to vote against Varsity being top rated though. Access to CTrain, School, shopping, parks while still being a 20 minute drive to downtown.

Compare that to say Bridlewood that was 2 minutes from Fish Creek, but a 45-1 hour commute each way to downtown.

Mission was amazing for access to patios, places to eat and 2 minutes to downtown, but during Stampede, Lilac, Flames games, could become a nightmare. Also got woken up by people partying in the apartments during the summer and homeless people fighting outside the buiding.

Long story short, Live where it works for you and don't get riled up by lists. Also if you live in the Deep South and commute downtown, you have my sympathies.
