Well, actually it was in all likelihood a number of senior lawyers at the Department of Justice who would have seconded the settlement, with perhaps final approval of a Deputy Minister (or some such high ranking bureaucrat) with either the DOJ or the DOD.

Were you his lawyer? Why do you keep calling him Mr. Khadr? Odd.

In the hockey forums, do you refer to players as Mr. Monahan and Mr. Gaudreau making a great play for their employer Mr Edwards.

Just force of habit. Sorry if it's distracting.

I meant that to sound more facetious than anything. Reading it again, it sounds like I'm being condescending. Sorry bro.

I would expect that he won't have that money for long, the widow of the man that Kadr murdered, will probably file a lawsuit against him.
His lawyers will get a chunk of that money.

I don't believe a juvenile can be sued for their criminal actions in Canada, I doubt they can touch the award.

I would expect that Speer and Morris will be coming for that money.
Note that is against Ahmed Khadr's estate and not towards Omar Khadr personally so it's irrelevant here. They've just initiated civil suit against Omar Khadr so that's up in the air. Also Omar Khadr is appealing his conviction in the US court system, and based on how other Guantanamo base cases have gone he has his murder conviction vacated.

I don't know where you got that information. These links suggest the judgment is against Omar:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...ticle25242269/

http://nationalpost.com/news/canada/...e-baf61b4bdb15

But also, it might not be enforceable in Canada:

EDIT: I guess it comes down to whether wikipedia is more accurate than the journalists.

Admittedly I am somewhat confused with this case.

Ok, I get that the Canadian government was aware of his capture and his detention in gitmo and was subject to potential torture during his imprisonment. But the Canadian government didn't carry out those acts, nor did Canadian soldiers.

Does this mean that Canada has an obligation to try to get nationals out of foreign prisons under any circumstance? Aren't there hundreds of other Canadians locked up abroad in pretty abhorred conditions for things like drug running?

This whole situation sucks. Nobody wins here, except maybe the lawyers.

Off topic but I wonder what Trump's answer would be if someone asked him which source he would consider more accurate.

In fact, as I understand it, both of Khadr's lawyers have provided their services pro bono and indeed have even paid disbursements such as airfare out of their own pockets. I've heard Mr. Edney speak a number of times. Very charismatic and interesting man.

The government lawyers, on salary, probably just put in a whole bunch of extra unpaid late nights at the office.

Also worth noting that if the claim was against Omar, he was noted in default while he was in prison. So the judgment's value in terms of establishing any sort of wrongdoing or moral blameworthiness is essentially nil.

It looks like they can apply to have the judgment enforceable in Canada...
