Default TSN: Flames will wait until after season on (re-signing) Brian Elliott

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-...avares~1083093

starts at the 3:30 mark

LeBrun:
Elliott would like to stay in Calgary and thinks it is a nice fit
The feeling is probably mutual
Flames front office doesn't want any distractions. They want to focus on a hopefully long playoff run and then deal with Elliott and that situation later on

Signing Elliott this late in the season would be silly. I'm sure the team would like to see how he performs in the playoffs prior to signing him to any sort of deal with term.

Risky. If Elliott keeps playing like this the Flames will find themselves in a bidding war.

A conference finals repeat would go a long way to landing a nice contract.

I don't think players like bouncing around the league. I think he'd want to stay given the way the team in front of him has been playing and the full time gig he would be granted.

I think that's a smart move.

See how our season ends... and with the expansion draft there's going to be a lot up in the air on the goalie landscape.

It's been a huge plus to have him back to form lately but I'd like to see if it continues into the playoffs as well as who's available after the season ends before we commit to anything / anyone.

Is there a deadline by which Elliott has to re-sign in order for the Blues to receive that conditional 3rd?

I remember reading somewhere that the conditional 5th in the Stone trade was contingent on him re-signing by July 1st, wonder if it's the same case for Elliott. Can't find anything about this.

Might be a sneaky way to avoid giving those picks up while still having 'handshake' agreements in place.

Not that risky.

If he likes the fit which is what is suggested, and the Flames are comfortable with him as #1 moving forward and are willing to pay him as such...should be a fairly easy negotiation.

If it is money he is more concerned with, then yes it could be a problem but if both sides are about getting it done its should get done.

Bishop will be on the market as will MAF in some capacity and really there's only a small handful of teams that will be looking to fill the starter position via UFA. If Elliot's camp decides to play hard ball the Flames would have other options.

Plus he's not going to be the only goalie available. He's playing well now, but he also stunk early in the year. If there is a free agent goalie out there who would want to avoid finding new chemistry with a new team and new coach and new system, it's probably Elliot.

Both sides should be able to find some common ground and work out a deal in the Summer.

Have a gut feeling that Vancouver throws money and term at Bishop. Further crippling their franchise.

It's a buyer's market this year.

You can never rule out the Canucks making a poor UFA signing for sure. I hope Benning doesn't get fired because you never know they could hire a competent GM.

Yeah, the price might increase...but that would be because he continues to play like the goaltender we've seen since the calendar flipped over and leads the Flames into the playoffs and on a run that goes more than a couple weeks.

I'll trade a bit of known success for a few dollars at this point.

think it makes sense...

Elliot has been great, but i doubt it will be a bidding war for him...he'll get fair market value... any bidding war would be of minor impact imo...

Now that said, if he absolutely lights it up in the playoffs, calgary could accelerate talks, as i would imagine that there is a small window for him to re-sign prior to hitting the UFA market

Buyers market. flames will have the cap space to get the goalie they want at a fair price. There are four legit starters on the market and only two starting goalie spots, as things currently stand.

Fortunately, Canucks ownership can't be fired, so no matter who the GM is, he'll be hamstrung.

I know the team wasn't clicking at the start but the switch from Red Pads to White has been incredible for Moose. These stats represent the switch occurring Nov 30. (correct me if I'm wrong). I like the New Moose.
