I thought it was a little much when we had to pay for the evacuation of 13,000 so called Canadian citizens from Lebanon during their war at a cost of $100M.

It took my cousin over 6 months from when they go married to bring her over here and after they got married the government denied her visitation visa's because they figured she wouldn't leave. So it definately is a pretty intensive process to do it.
I brought my American wife to Canada, and had to prove quite a bit about our relationship. They wanted a significant amount of detail and photographic proof detailing our history. It wasn't necessarily hard, but it wasn't also a snap either.
We never got that runaround but I was hoping we would. Just send video of her slurping up your #@%@#%. That enough beaurocrat?

I have lived in Canada for over 25 years as a Permanent Resident (previously known as a Landed Immigrant). Last December, I decided to apply for my Citizenship, so I filled out all the paperwork, jumped through all the hoops and paid the fees, which they promptly took.
They told me 3-6 months. I haven't heard a thing.....I guess they are busy

My dad did the same thing last year after 35 years. It took me a year for him. Proud day when it's done though
I'm glad they are looking more into this.
I know the red tape I had to get through and the time it took to get my family here, when I used to share my story with a few other immigrant coworkers I would get laughed at. "We paid a guy and we were all here in 6 months". I know of girls misrepresnted as sisters/daughters of people they weren't related to, guys marrying their brothers Canadian girlfriends, made up stories of persecution for refugee status.
Makes me angry, the hoops I had to jump through others simply side stepped.

Having spend a good decade going through the whole visa process in the US, it became pretty clear that the more you go about things honestly via the proper channels, the harder it is to get that piece of paper. I'm not surprised it's the same here.

As someone who has known a fair number of people who have gone through the Canadian immigration process, this is just totally absurd.
Not sure if you're saying the comment is absurd or the process commented on.
I've known several Indian girls (to be fair a couple of guys too) who have gone home for 2 weeks vacation and come back married, to a stranger no less. (Not here to comment on their culture of arranged marriges).
Most of these people have had their spouse here in 6 months or less.
Why did it take me near 2 years to get my wife and child here when the person standing next to me can get a stranger here in six months???

Because you're honest. Thank you for chosing Canada and welcome. If I had the power, all those who came here fraudulently would be on a plane back to wherever they came from, tomorrow.

I know a girl here who married a guy who was of Indian descent (his parents immigrated here). The girl is white and born in Canada. The guy's parents were EXTREMELY upset that he married her. She told me it was because they wanted him to go back to India and chose a girl from there. By doing that he would have received a $32,000 Cdn dowry from her parents (this was back in the 1980's).
Needless to say they divorced about 4 years later. From what I understand the primary cause of the divorce was the guys parents as they never accepted her into the family and basically made life miserable for her.
I'm sure he's probably married to a girl from the "old country" now.

Yeah, I have a buddy who is a citizen here now, but has a wife and a daughter in Pakistan and has spent like $12000 over the last few years, in repeated attempts to fight the government for rejecting the fact that he is legitimately married to his wife, as they keep telling him that they believe the marriage was just to get her over here.
It's pretty tough to see, as a hard working, really, truley nice guy gets more upset and depressed by the day, as he works hard every day and never sees his wife and daughter in the hopes that one day it will pay off with a better life in Canada for his family.
